Student answer (Band 6.0)

In their advertising, nowadays businesses often promote the idea that there is something new in their products. I think it is a positive development for the nation and this essay discusses why this happen and how it is an advantageous for the society.

To commence with, companies use a variety of advertising techniques to increase the popularity of their products so that it can be effective for influencing people towards their products by launching new functions or modifications in their products. For instance, Apple launched a new series of phone every year with new changes, which makes their product more advanced and famous among the public. Thus, this will boost the sales of their products. Moreover, companies compete with their competitors by inventing or adding new features to their actual or original products. Therefore, this increases the quality of product of every company to stand out in the market.

Furthermore, I believe that it is a positive development. The first and foremost reason why it has a positive impact on the society is that it improves the classifications of goods. In other words, there are several companies in the market for the same products but the people influence by the best featured product, which has its brand value. Consequently, competition between companies can not only assist advancement of the products with new features and innovations but also helps in economic growth. If a product works properly and influences citizen, it will also be famous in other countries, which increases foreign exchange rate. For example, Japan is one of the best technological countries where all new innovations take place with technology, and export in other countries as well.

In conclusion, while the companies use new advertising ways as there is something new in their products which helps in influence the public and improve the quality of their products with new functions, I think it is a positive development because it increases new innovations and economic growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining why businesses emphasise new products and giving a clear opinion that this is a positive development. In the first body paragraph, the writer explains that companies introduce new functions to increase popularity and boost sales, supported by the example of Apple launching a new phone series every year. In the second body paragraph, the argument is extended to societal and economic benefits, such as improved product quality, innovation, and economic growth through exports, exemplified by Japan. While the ideas are relevant and supported with examples, some points tend to over-generalise slightly or lack deeper elaboration, placing the response comfortably at Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing a logical progression of ideas throughout. The writer uses cohesive devices to signal structure, such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in the phrase 'so that it can be effective for influencing people towards their products' and 'the people influence by the best featured product'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but transitional phrases can feel somewhat formulaic, reflecting Band 6 performance characteristics.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'modifications', 'innovations', and 'foreign exchange rate'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form throughout the text. For instance, the writer uses 'classifications of goods' instead of 'quality or variety of goods', and 'the people influence' instead of 'people are influenced'. Despite these vocabulary and word-form errors, communication is not impeded, which aligns well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, voice, and prepositions. Examples include 'why this happen' instead of 'why this happens', 'how it is an advantageous for the society' instead of 'how it is advantageous for society', and 'export in other countries' instead of 'export to other countries'. While these errors occur regularly across the text, the meaning remains comprehensible, and some complex structures are managed well, earning a Band 6.0.
