IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent time, many business enterprises have resorted to marketing strategies where the products in their advertisements are promoted as new. The possible reason could be attributed to the need to remain relevant by keeping up with the latest fad in their respective fields. While some believe this is beneficial for the consumers other are concerned over the possible misrepresentation of the products to entice consumers.

We see many ads featuring the latest version of a company's product; for example, mobile phone companies release new models of the same phone with few modifications every year. On one hand this is a positive development as it means that these companies are constantly identifying ways to make their products better. They may be open to feedback and criticisms of users, and may add or remove features to enhance the overall user satisfaction. Similarly, the advertisements may help bring attention to the fact the companies are adopting the latest tech or even innovating in their respective fields. When enterprises put out such ads, it creates competition and forces business rivals to keep up. For instance, the famous rivalry between smart phone manufacturing companies: Apple and Samsung. This could prove to be beneficial to the buyers because they can choose from a range of products that are striving to produce the best user experience.

The downsides of such marketing is the possibility of misleading the buyer by creating a false impression of inovation or betterment of the product. In recent time, Apple has received criticism related to its habbit of annual release of Iphone ads with apparently little to no changes compared to its former model. Furthermore, such ads can create a false sense of value and surge the prices of these products. Additionally, many youngsters, may feel the need to keep up with their peers and buy the latest models despite not having a real requirement. This can lead to over consumption and in the long-term, can cause environmental harm. This negative effect can be prevented by governments, enforcing strict regulation on ads that would ensure that the claims regarding the product are credible.

In conclusion, athough this devlopment has several potential benefits, its immediate and long term disadvantages are harmfull. However, strict regulation by the government can help prevent exploitation of its buyers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the reasons why businesses emphasise new products in their advertising and evaluating whether this is a positive or negative development. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The reasons provided, such as keeping up with market fads and technological advancements, are extended and well-supported with relevant examples, notably the rivalry between Apple and Samsung. Furthermore, the negative aspects, such as potential misrepresentation, consumerism, and environmental impact, are thoughtfully explored. Ideas are well-developed and cover the prompt comprehensively, fitting comfortably within the Band 7 criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, transitioning smoothly from introduction to positive aspects, negative aspects, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately and flexibly, such as 'On one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. While referencing and linking are generally clear, occasional slight mechanical sequencing keeps this criterion at a solid Band 7 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision, employing less common lexical items such as 'marketing strategies', 'misrepresentation', 'over consumption', and 'exploitation'. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice errors, including 'In recent time' instead of 'In recent times', 'inovation' instead of 'innovation', 'habbit' instead of 'habit', 'devlopment' instead of 'development', and 'harmfull' instead of 'harmful'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary used is adequate to convey meaning clearly, supporting a Band 6.5 or rounded Band 6 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses ('When enterprises put out such ads, it creates competition...'). There are several grammatical errors present, such as missing articles ('consumers other are concerned', 'the fact the companies'), pluralisation issues ('few modifications'), and minor punctuation errors. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the overall structure remains coherent, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
