Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is undeniable that most businesses nowadays emphasise that their products are new and seperate from similar products in some way. This essay will illustrate the reason for this business tactic, giving insight on developments from this with a logical conclusion.

To commence with, the main point is that most businesses advertise their products as more useful and different from similar products made by different companies to compete with brand competition. In the modern world, the number of businesses and entrepreneurs has increased drastically, leading to similar or same products being made by different organisations with different brand names. The core function of the product is usually the same, with different aesthetic choices and prices based on the brand selling them. Thus, product competition between different businesses has increased, leading every business to label their product as unique and more durable from the rest. This is done to win over the trust of consumers, for increasing customer base and loyalty. Nowadays, brands compete with each other everyday to put inherently similar products in a customer's household. Advertising also plays a crucial role in building consumer confidence and clarity before purchase, while bringing new customers interested in the product. Moving further, advertisements are the best way to make a product stand out, but, it depends on the number of viewers and overall quality of the advertisement.

However, I personally think that this is a positive development to much extent, while businesses emphasise that their products are new in some way, this creates competition between different organisations to create the better product which directly benefits the consumer. In addition, most businesses lower the selling price of their products or offer discounts as many similar products are already available on the market. Moreover, describing products as new has shown to improve sales, increasing profit for the company and improving the wages of their employees. For example, when a company releases a brand new smartphone, they adverise it as new and different from other smartphones including some new features, higher durability and resilience to damage, this helps build a good image of the product in the minds of consumers, increasing sales.

In conclusion, emphasising a product's uniqueness in advertisements is incredibly useful for both the business and consumers. It helps in showcasing new features in products and also gives incentive to other businesses to improve their products by adding additional quality of life changes, making sure the buyer gets the best possible product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why businesses emphasise that their products are new, and whether this is a positive or negative development. A clear position is maintained throughout, particularly in the third paragraph where the candidate states, 'I personally think that this is a positive development to much extent'. Ideas are generally well-extended and supported with relevant reasoning, such as how competition drives companies to lower prices and improve product durability. However, the development of ideas occasionally slips into generalisation, and some points, such as the discussion on advertising quality, could have been more tightly focused on the core question. Overall, all parts of the task are well-covered, aligning with the Band 7 criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured into distinct paragraphs, starting with a clear introduction, followed by body paragraphs exploring the causes and the student's viewpoint, and ending with a logical conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'To commence with', 'Moving further', and 'In addition', although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, meeting the standard for clear logical progression and management of cohesive elements.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using terms such as 'entrepreneurs', 'inherently similar', 'durability', and 'resilience to damage'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style, though there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'to much extent' instead of 'to a large extent' and the misspelling 'adverise'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication, fitting the Band 6.5 or solid Band 7 profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and conditional structures. There is a good variety of sentence structures attempted; however, a number of grammatical errors and punctuation slips persist, such as comma splices ('In the modern world... different brand names') and preposition misuse ('for increasing customer base'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the text from achieving higher error-free frequency. Control of grammar is generally sufficient to make the meaning clear, matching the descriptors for Band 6.
