Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, businesses increasingly emphasise the fact that their products are new and contain improved feature when advertising them. This is mainly because companies want to attract consumers, increase sales and distinguish their items from competitors. In my opinion it is a postive development because it encourages innovation and lead to better products for shoppers.

There are several reason why firms focus on the novelty of their products in commercials. Firstly, highlighting new features can attract customers who are interested in having the latest products. In highly competitive markets, corporations need to make their goods stand out from similar products offered by other organisations. Even relatively small alterations, such as better camera, longer battery life, and more attractive desighn, can encourage people to purchase a newer version. Furthermore, advertising new features can also help enterprises made innovative and modern brand image, which may increase purchaser trust and loyalty. For example, smartphone companies such as Apple and Sumsung regularly promote improved cameras, processors, and battery performance to pursue clients to upgrade their devices.

I believe that this trend is largely positive development because it strives businesses to invest in innovation and improve the quality of products. When companies compete to introduce new and useful feature, they often invest more money on research and development, which can lead to technologgical progress. As a result, households may benefit from products that are more efficient, durable, convenient and user-friendly than previous version. Moreover, competition between companies provide consumers with wide variety of options and allow them to select products that suit their needs and budgets. For instance, competition among car manufacturers has contributed to development of safer, more fuel-convenient and enviornmental friendly vehicles.

In conclusion, businesses mainly emphasise the novelty in their products to attract customers, exaggerate sales and gain a popularity. Although some companies may enhance minor changes in their advetisements, I believe this is generally a positive advancement which can promote innovative, better quality and give greater choices to buyers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why businesses emphasise new products and offering a clear opinion that this is a positive development. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as when discussing how competition drives research, development, and technological progress. For example, the mention of smartphone companies and car manufacturers provides relevant supporting evidence. Although some points are slightly generalised, such as the discussion on consumer choices, the task is fully addressed and ideas are well developed overall, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall progression and is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each part of the prompt, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and referencing is generally clear. However, cohesion feels slightly mechanical at times due to a reliance on standard transitional markers, placing the response firmly within the Band 7 criteria for clear logical organisation and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, using terms like 'novelty', 'distinguish their items', 'technological progress', and 'user-friendly'. There are some less common lexical items attempted with awareness of style, though occasional inaccuracies and spelling slips occur, such as 'postive', 'desighn', 'made' instead of 'create', 'technoggical', and 'exaggerate' instead of 'increase' or 'maximize'. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and communication is never impeded, fitting the Band 6 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showing good control over complex forms in sentences like 'When companies compete to introduce new and useful feature, they often invest more money on research and development...'. There are several grammatical errors present, including pluralisation and agreement issues such as 'improved feature' instead of 'features', 'several reason' instead of 'reasons', 'strives businesses' instead of 'drives businesses', and 'provide consumers' instead of 'provides'. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the frequent use of error-free sentences supports a Band 6 rating.
