Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, most of the businesses are advertising their product and emphasizing that in some aspects, their products are relatively new. This essay will discuss why this trend occurs and explain why I believe it is a positive development.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why companies constantly promote their goods as new, The primary reason is intense market competition. In today's global market, hundreds of companies offer similar products, so companies must find a way to grab customer's attention. By highlighting new features, upgrades and designs, businesses can create curiosity and excitement among buyers. For example, smartphone manufacturers like Apple or Samsung releases new models every year with minor updates, using these announcements to convince customers to upgrade from their older devices.

On the other hand, I believe this trend is largely positive development for both the market and consumers. When businesses focus on creating "new product", it pushes them to innovate and improves the quality of their goods. To stay competitive, companies invest in research to make items faster, safer and more energy-efficient. A clear example of this is the automotive industry, where car makers constantly design newer, eco-friendly electric vehicles. This ongoing cycle of improvement ensures that consumers constantly get better, more advanced choices in the market.

In conclusion, businesses emphasize the innovation of their product to stand out in a competitive marketplace, and I view this trend positively because it drives continuous modernity and benefits consumers with higher-quality products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both why businesses emphasise new products and evaluating whether this is a positive or negative development. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed, such as the general economic impacts beyond consumer choice. Furthermore, it must be noted that the word count requirement of 250 words is not met, as the response contains 244 words. This slight shortfall prevents the response from fully exploring the prompt within the recommended scope, keeping the achievement at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently arranged with a recognizable overall progression. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct introductions and body paragraphs addressing individual parts of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used adequately and flexibly, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', although referencing occasionally leans slightly mechanical. Overall, the structure guides the reader smoothly from the introduction to the conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'intense market competition', 'energy-efficient', and 'eco-friendly', demonstrating a reasonable awareness of style and collocation. However, there are some minor word-choice and grammatical-form inaccuracies, such as 'releases new models' (disagreement with plural subject 'manufacturers') and 'positive development' missing an article ('a largely positive development'). These occasional errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as a comma splice in the second paragraph ('companies constantly promote their goods as new, The primary reason...') and a missing article before singular countable nouns ('innovation of their product'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the majority of sentences to convey their intended meaning without difficulty.
