Student answer (Band 6.0)

Despite producing new items rapidly, many businesses nowadays usually claim in their advertisements that their products are new in some way. I strongly believe it is not a positive development, because it can influence people to have higher expectations of products of these companies.

One of the major drawbacks of this initiative is that it can cause the majority of businesses' failure to perform well in markets due to expectations that individuals have with these particular products. Additionally, if the product does not match the desired expectation level, it will lead to raising the level of dissatisfaction among individuals and will fail to retain customers. For instance, many companies that emphasise that their products are newer than others to stand out in the market are facing greater unsatisfactory feedback from customers. Therefore, it cannot be considered a positive development in the field of business and marketing.

Another major negative impact of this is that following this concept businesses can become more aware of the presentation of their products in a society, while ignoring the need to focus more on the quality of products, which can eventually lead to market myopia, a phenomenon associated with the retarded approach towards product quality. A clear illustration of this is provided by various new entrepreneurs who focused more on advertising their products as new to the market, have experienced market myopia more than others.

Although we cannot neglect the short-term benefit of promoting items as new products in a market such as gaining more customers initially, from my perspective, its adverse impacts on businesses, which include difficulty retaining customer and increased levels of dissatisfaction, are far more significant than positive effects.

To conclude, market myopia and increased expectation levels with cetain products can adversely affect businesses by making it hard to retain customers. From my point of view, it's a negative development as it exhibits major disadvantages that cannot be outweighed by the minute advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why businesses emphasize that their products are new and stating a clear position that this is a negative development. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, while you mention that it raises expectations and leads to dissatisfaction, the explanation remains somewhat generalized without exploring deeper market mechanisms. To reach a higher band, you would need to extend your supporting ideas with more fully elaborated arguments and specific, detailed examples rather than relying on brief mentions of customer feedback or new entrepreneurs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout, successfully meeting the requirements of the lower band and showing elements of the next. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct introduction, body, and concluding sections. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the major drawbacks', 'Additionally', and 'Although we cannot neglect' are used to structure the text, though referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely natural. To progress further, ensure that every cohesive transition seamlessly connects ideas without any slight stiffness in logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'market myopia' and 'dissatisfaction'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'raising the level of dissatisfaction' instead of 'increasing customer dissatisfaction' or 'difficulty retaining customer' where a plural noun is required. However, these minor errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocation, ensuring that less common lexical items are used with natural stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over longer structures such as concessive clauses starting with 'Although'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, including article omissions and preposition choices, such as 'expectations that individuals have with these particular products' instead of 'for these products'. Nonetheless, these errors rarely impede communication. To move up to the next level, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and finer control over grammatical patterns and punctuation.
