Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt partially, discussing why businesses emphasise new products and giving a personal view on whether this is positive. However, the ideas are limited and under-developed, lacking deep elaboration on the consequences for consumers and society. Furthermore, the response falls short of the required 250-word minimum, containing only 210 words. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to fully extend their arguments with more detailed explanations and examples, while ensuring the length requirement is met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a lack of proper paragraphing, as the entire text is written as a single, continuous block of text without any clear separation into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Additionally, information and ideas are not arranged coherently due to a severe lack of punctuation and cohesive devices, making the progression difficult to follow. Sentences tend to run into one another without adequate transitional phrases or full stops. To improve, the writer must organise the essay into distinct paragraphs and use appropriate cohesive devices to guide the reader through the arguments.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that may cause some difficulty for the reader. Examples of errors include 'advertisment', 'modren', 'someting', 'pericious', 'catogary', and 'sucssesful'. There are also awkward collocations and repetitive phrasing, such as 'newest thing' and 'growing an business'. To progress to a higher band, the student needs to expand their lexical repertoire, use less common vocabulary accurately, and eliminate spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text demonstrates a very limited range of structures, consisting predominantly of long, run-on sentences connected by conjunctions rather than a controlled mix of simple and complex forms. There are frequent errors in punctuation, particularly the total absence of capitalisation and full stops throughout the response, which causes difficulty for the reader. Additionally, issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage persist. To achieve a higher score, the writer must incorporate proper sentence boundaries, improve punctuation control, and reduce the frequency of grammatical errors.
