Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the last few decades, people tend to be more involved in works which are about promoting things, such as clothes, cars, phones, shops, foods and etc. However, it has some criteria to advertise. Some people says everything does not have to be always new, while others saying it has to include something new in certain way possible. From my perspective i think it is positive development to introduce products with new thing and it can bring ourselves to high levels.

Firstly, people get bored of something easily which is why every businesses navigate their goals to satisfy people's willness. For example, when smartphone brands release models with upgraded camera lenses or faster processors, consumer interest spikes because people constantly look for improved efficiency and better user experiences.

Furthermore, emphasizing novelty drives continuous innovation within competitive markets. If companies simply manufactured identical goods year after year, technological advancement and product design would stagnate. By striving to introduce new features, businesses push each other to improve quality, enhance safety standards, and develop more sustainable manufacturing practices. For instance, the automotive industry's push for newer, eco-friendly electric vehicles has drastically accelerated green technology worldwide.

On the other hand, some might argue that this relentless focus on newness can encourage a wasteful consumerist culture, where people discard perfectly functional items simply because they are outdated. While this is a valid concern that highlights the importance of durability and recycling, the overall drive for innovation remains beneficial.

In conclusion, while businesses emphasize new products largely to cater to shifting consumer demands and prevent boredom, this trend is predominantly a positive development. It not only satisfies consumer preferences for better functionality but also fuels continuous economic and technological progress.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why businesses emphasize new products and offering a clear personal perspective on whether this is a positive or negative development. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which places the response firmly within the mid-range. For instance, the first body paragraph touches on consumer boredom and smartphone examples well, but the counter-argument regarding consumerist culture in the fourth paragraph is somewhat brief and touches superficially on durability and recycling without fully extending the argument. To reach higher levels, all supporting points would need to be equally elaborated with deeper analysis and more comprehensive examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction through to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to the reasons behind the trend, the positive impacts of innovation, the counter-perspective, and a summary. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive in transitions, such as the reliance on standard connectors like 'Furthermore' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is mostly clear, though some transitional links between sentences could flow more naturally to achieve a higher level of seamless cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, allowing the writer to communicate ideas clearly about commerce, consumer habits, and technological advancement. The student successfully attempts less common vocabulary items such as 'relentless focus', 'stagnate', and 'eco-friendly', demonstrating a reasonable command of topic-specific terminology. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'willness' instead of 'willingness', and awkward phrasing like 'bring ourselves to high levels'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they are infrequent enough that they do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as conditional and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'people tend' combined with singular elements, missing articles, and prepositional awkwardness such as 'in certain way possible' instead of 'in a certain way'. Additionally, the introduction contains punctuation slips like 'From my perspective i think'. Despite these persistent minor errors, the sentence structures are varied enough to ensure the meaning remains clear and communication is rarely impeded.
