Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding why businesses emphasise new products and whether this is positive or negative, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls significantly short of the two-hundred-and-fifty-word minimum. The writer states that companies promote new items to increase demand and profit, and touches upon the impact of honesty versus lying on customer trust. However, these points lack specific examples and full extension. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to provide fully developed explanations supported by relevant examples and ensure the full word count is met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but the overall progression lacks clarity. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on simple conjunctions like 'and' or transitional phrases like 'To conclude'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed, making the connections between ideas mechanical. For instance, the transition from why businesses advertise new products to the discussion of honesty is abrupt. Improving cohesion requires a more varied and accurate use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph develops a single clear central theme with smooth logical transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'buisness' instead of 'business', 'fasinating' instead of 'fascinating', and awkward phrasing like 'try to make their product more fasinating, attractive, and work in a good way'. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but control is weak. To improve lexical resource, the student should expand their working vocabulary, pay closer attention to word formation and spelling, and use precise collocations appropriate for academic writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple or basic compound sentences. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty, such as in the sentence 'It is always not same like if the company is advertising some products and say, they make the product much better this time and it have a positive impact on people'. Frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it have'), and punctuation can cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns and significantly reduce grammatical errors across basic and complex structures.
