Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent days, companies all around the world are shifting their strategies and promoting their goods with lucrative upgrades that helps attract consumers more and more. With few benefits, I believe this is predominantly a negative development, as this trend threatens the environment and pushes us deep into a capitalistic world.

One of the fundamental advantages of this trend is companies get to push-sell their freshly marketed goods that bring them more money. By luring people with some added benefits or upgrades, the marketing team enhances frequent shopping habit in some people. For instance, tech-giants like Samsung or Apple launch their phones each year promising customers with a better software development or simply by enhancing the outlook by introducing a new colour. This also helps stabilize the supply-demand curve as trends like these, ultimately, stimulates brand's image or prestige.

However, the major downside of this development is leads to people buying latest or newer version of products even if they don't necessarily need it, which eventually promotes over-consumption, damaging the environment with more wastes. Moreover, this economically and psychologically develops a culture of superficial materialism, which fuels capitalism at the end. People fall under the impression of buying a new expensive product to boost their own image as well. Most importantly, brands often false-advertise their products like claiming more nutritional value in particular snacks or drinks, putting a sensitive matter like health at risk.

To conclude, businesses prioritizes the novelty of their products to attract customers for a sustainable growth or income. However, I believe this is a highly negative development as it drives unsustainable consumption patterns and fueling environmental damage more and more.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both questions: you explain that novelty helps businesses attract buyers and increase sales, then clearly argue that the trend is mainly negative because it encourages overconsumption, environmental harm and materialism. The phone-launch example makes the commercial motive concrete, and the false-advertising point adds a relevant concern. This meets the task well, with a clear position and relevant support. To make the response more fully developed, explain the causes in greater depth—for example, how competition or rapid product cycles lead firms to emphasise novelty—and develop one or two consequences with a specific example. The claim that novelty “stabilize[s] the supply-demand curve” is not clearly explained, so clarify its connection to the argument or replace it with a more directly supported point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs present a business benefit and several drawbacks, and the conclusion restates your position. Transitions such as “However,” “Moreover” and “To conclude” help readers follow the main direction. However, the first body paragraph combines increased sales, shopping habits, phone launches and market stability without making the relationship between all these points clear. The second paragraph also moves quickly from environmental damage to materialism and misleading health claims. Group related ideas more deliberately, and use clearer links between each claim and its explanation. Some transitions currently signal contrast or addition mechanically rather than showing the precise logical relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “over-consumption,” “materialism,” “environmental damage” and “false-advertise,” which helps communicate the central concerns. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “supply-demand curve” and “sustainable growth.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “lucrative upgrades,” “push-sell,” “frequent shopping habit,” and “enhancing the outlook.” These sometimes make the intended meaning less precise, even though the overall argument remains understandable. Aim for natural collocations and check whether a phrase expresses the exact idea you intend. For example, describe companies as promoting “new features” or “product upgrades,” and refer to “encouraging frequent purchases” rather than a shopping habit.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional clause in “even if they don't necessarily need it” and a reason clause beginning “as this trend threatens the environment.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and reduce accuracy. For example, “upgrades that helps” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “the major downside … is leads” has an incorrect verb pattern. In “this … trend … stimulates,” the subject and verb do not agree, and “businesses prioritizes” has the same issue. The final sentence also shifts into the incomplete construction “as it drives … and fueling.” Review agreement with singular and plural subjects, and ensure coordinated verbs use matching forms. These corrections would make your varied sentence structures more controlled.
