Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays businesses spend a large amount of money on advertisements. There are many ways to advertise a product but businesses usually like to advertise their products as new and different from their competitors. I will discuss the reasons behind this phenomenon and elaborate why it is a positive development?.
The primary reason that businesses present their products as new is to stand out from the competition. To elaborate further, people only buy products which are different or better than others because it catches their attention . The best way for businesses to achieve this is to present their product as something new. This is because people always perceive a newer product as better than others. For example, people always buy the newer version of phones as they perceive it has more capable and advanced than the previous versions.
The impact of this developmnt is positive as it fosters competition and innovation. This approach of presenting a product as new forces the businesses to improve the product and make it better than their competitor's product. Consequently, customers get better products. This is the reason for which companies invest large amount of funds in research and development.
To conclude, the emphasis of a product being new is to capture the interest of the buyer and sell the product. I would say it is a positive development as this leads to an overall increase in the quality of products which benefits the customer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both questions and maintain a clear positive position: you explain that businesses highlight novelty to stand out, then link this to competition, innovation and improved products. The phone example supports the first reason, and the reference to research and development helps explain the claimed benefits. However, the discussion is brief and several claims are asserted rather than fully explained—for instance, why consumers assume newer phones are better, or how advertising claims actually lead companies to innovate. The response also falls 11 words short of the required minimum, which limits the scope available for developing your ideas. Add a further specific example and explain the connection between novelty-focused advertising and genuine product improvement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the reason and your evaluation, and a conclusion that restates your position. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “To elaborate further,” “Consequently,” and “To conclude” help guide the reader. This coherent arrangement is a strength. Some connections are nevertheless mechanical or imprecise: “This is the reason for which” is an awkward link, while “This approach” could refer more clearly to advertising products as new or to improving them. The introduction also announces what the essay will do rather than smoothly leading into the argument. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer references between claims to make the progression more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for communicating the main ideas, with relevant terms such as “competition,” “innovation,” “research and development,” and “advanced.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of general words and phrases, especially “new,” “product,” “businesses,” and “better.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “more capable” when describing a phone and “the emphasis of a product being new.” There are also spelling errors such as “developmnt,” and “advertisements” is joined to the following sentence without a space. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Aim to use more exact collocations and vary repeated wording, while checking spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and some complex forms, including a reason clause (“This is because…”) and a result clause (“Consequently…”). Most ideas remain understandable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “I will discuss … positive development?” incorrectly uses a question mark after a statement, and “people perceive it has more capable” is missing the structure needed after “perceive” (for example, “perceive it to be more capable”). There are also article and number issues in “invest large amount of funds,” and spacing problems after full stops. To improve, check sentence boundaries and practise accurate patterns with verbs such as “perceive,” as well as articles and plural forms.
