Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, businesses often emphasise that their products are new in their advertisements. There are several reasons for this, such as attrcting customers and competing with other companies. In my opinion, I believe this is a positive development because it encourages companies to improve their products.

One important reason is that new products can attract more customers. People are usually interested in trying new things, especially when a product has better features or a modern design. For example, when a company introduce a new smartphone with a better camera, longer battery life or faster performance, many people may want to buy it. Therefore, advertising new products is an effective way for businesses to increase their sales.

Another reason why I think this is positive is that competition encourages companies to develop better products. Businesses need to offer something new if they want to be more successful than their competitors. For instance, car companies are now producing more electric cars with improved technology and longer battery life. This competition can lead to products that are safer, more useful and more environmentally friendly. As a result, customers have more choices and can enjoy better quality products.

In conclusion, companies emphasise the newness of their products maainly to attract customers and compare with other businesses. Although this can sometimes encourage people to buy things they do not really need. I believe it is generally a positive development. This is because competition motivates companies to create better and more innovative products, which can benefit both businesses and customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it explains that businesses highlight newness to attract customers and compete, and it clearly states that this is generally positive because it encourages product improvement. The smartphone and electric-car examples make the reasoning relevant and help extend the main points. The conclusion also acknowledges a possible drawback—that advertising may prompt unnecessary purchases—before reaffirming the position. To strengthen the response further, develop this qualification rather than leaving it as a brief, incomplete sentence, and explain more specifically how advertising claims about novelty can influence consumers. Overall, the position is clear and the ideas are supported, though some claims remain fairly general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two focused body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Ideas progress logically from attracting customers to competition and product improvement, and linking expressions such as “For example,” “Therefore,” and “As a result” help show relationships between claims. The conclusion returns to the central argument. Cohesion is generally effective, although the final paragraph’s “Although this can sometimes encourage people to buy things they do not really need” is left as a sentence fragment, interrupting the flow. The opening also previews two reasons, but the body’s second paragraph combines competition with the positive effects of innovation. More precise links between the reasons and the evaluation would make the progression even smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Vocabulary is adequate for the topic and includes relevant terms such as “features,” “competitors,” “improved technology,” and “environmentally friendly.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, but the range is somewhat repetitive: “new,” “products,” “companies,” and “better” recur often, and some phrasing is imprecise. For example, “compare with other businesses” does not express the intended idea of competing, while “maainly” and “attrcting” are spelling errors. “Modern design” and “faster performance” are understandable but could be developed with more precise product-related language. Aim to vary key terms and check spelling, while choosing collocations that express the intended meaning accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional clause (“if they want to be more successful”) and a relative clause (“which can benefit both businesses and customers”). Most sentences are easy to understand, and the main argument is not obscured. Some grammatical errors remain: “when a company introduce” needs subject–verb agreement (“introduces”), and “Although this can sometimes encourage people to buy things they do not really need” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence. There are also punctuation problems in “In conclusion, companies,” where a space is needed after the comma. Greater control of agreement, complete sentence boundaries, and punctuation would build on the range already demonstrated.
