IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Companies now focus on newness of their goods in the marketing. It is due to increased competition in retail business. I think it is a positive development because companies atleast are trying to improve their products or producing new ones.

There is a severe competition in today's retail market. No product can generate a sale without offering value in some way to the consumers. Companies need to present their product unique feature and why their products are better than older one or a completely new version or a new product. It is really difficult in today's era to sell a product exactly same as one already available in market due to first mover advantage. For example, Nokia being leader in keypad phones failed to capture market of smartphones due to late lauch of its product without any improvement than already available in the market for consumers.

I believe that presenting any new feature or property of product while it is being advertised is a positive step towards a market that favors consumers. This habit will lead to an improvement whenever there is a new launch of a product because this trend will set a precedent that only products with any newness can perform better in market. This will lead to continuous improvement and hopefully at a better price due to competition in the market. For example, when Apple launched its Macbook Air they presented its unique feature of being thin which created a trend of slim laptops. At present, almost every laptop manufacture not only focus of performance but as well as design and build.

To conclude, Businesses are introducing their products are preaching these new in some way due to increased competition in market which requires new products or improved products instead of copies of previous one. I believe this is highly valuable development because it will lead to continuous betterment of product and it is in benefit of consumer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain that businesses stress newness because of competition, and you clearly judge this as positive for consumers. The Nokia example supports your explanation of why firms need to distinguish their products, while the MacBook Air example illustrates how a feature can influence wider product design. Your position remains consistent from the introduction to the conclusion. To strengthen the response further, develop the explanation of why advertising specifically highlights newness—for example, how this attracts attention or shapes consumers’ perceptions—rather than focusing mainly on the pressure to innovate. The claim that new products will lead to better products “at a better price” is also somewhat general and would benefit from a clearer explanation or qualification.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs explaining the cause and your opinion, and a concluding summary. Ideas progress logically from market competition to product improvement, and examples are placed where they support the relevant point. Linking phrases such as “For example,” “This will lead to,” and “To conclude” help guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth, however: the shift from the Nokia example to the consumer-focused argument could be made more explicit, and “This habit” and “This trend” refer broadly to the practice of emphasising newness. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions so that links feel less formulaic. The conclusion also repeats earlier claims rather than drawing them together in a more concise final insight.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “increased competition,” “first mover advantage,” “unique feature,” “continuous improvement,” and “consumer.” These choices make your main points clear, and terms such as “keypad phones” and “slim laptops” add useful specificity. However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “a severe competition” is not natural, “present their product unique feature” is awkward, and “laptop manufacture” uses the wrong form. There are also spelling errors such as “atleast” and “lauch.” Aim to use common business collocations accurately and check spelling and word forms. More precise alternatives for repeated phrases such as “newness” and “better” would also make the argument more flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure “No product can generate a sale without offering value” and the longer sentence beginning “This habit will lead to an improvement whenever there is a new launch.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “There is a severe competition” has an article/countability problem, while “Companies need to present their product unique feature” lacks a clear possessive structure. In “almost every laptop manufacture not only focus,” the subject–verb agreement is incorrect, and the paired construction “not only … but as well as” is not formed correctly. Review articles, possessives, agreement, and parallel structures, then proofread longer sentences to improve control.
