IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadays, many businesses mention that there are some new modifications and changes in their product by launching new kind of advertisements frequently, they do this to maintain their reputation and sales in order to make more financial gains, I think this is a negative development because most of the products are fabricated and don't have that much changes as they show in advertisments.
Many of businesses fabricate this information because they donot want to loose people's interest in their product, also financial instability also enforces companies to make these false claims, for instance a pharma company introduced a newer formula for their face mask, users report that the formula used in that was same, only the packaging was changed.
I think that this is a negative approach because making false claims by actually not providing and proving those claims could be more misleading and will lead to less sales, companies should understand that inorder to make more sales, they need to upscale/upgrade the product first so that people can use and review it as per the changing in the product. By doing this they can potentially get more sales which can help company grow financially.
In conclusion, I think that companies should provide what they claim for rather than faking some things in there product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You give a clear view that this trend is negative and offer a relevant reason: businesses may exaggerate product changes to protect sales, illustrated by the face-mask example where only the packaging changed. You also explain that misleading claims can reduce sales and suggest improving products instead. However, the response addresses the question only partially because it gives little explanation of why businesses emphasise novelty beyond maintaining interest and seeking financial gains. The example is brief, and the consequences and proposed solution are not developed with specific detail. The response is also 35 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain both parts of the prompt. Develop the reasons for the advertising strategy and support your evaluation more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs explain your concerns, and a conclusion restates your view. The ideas are generally relevant and the example appears in the paragraph about false claims. However, progression is limited because the first body paragraph repeats the idea of financial motivation, while the next moves quickly from misleading claims to a recommendation without a clear transition. Linking expressions such as “also” and “By doing this” are used mechanically, and the long opening sentence joins several ideas in a way that makes their relationships difficult to follow. Give each paragraph a distinct purpose and use clearer links between the business motive, the example, and the effects on consumers and sales.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial gains,” “false claims,” “misleading,” and “upgrade the product.” These choices communicate your main concerns, but the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or awkward, which makes the writing less precise. For example, “new modifications and changes” is repetitive, “fabricate this information” is not a natural way to describe exaggerated advertising, and “changing in the product” is unclear. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “advertisments,” “donot,” and “loose” where “lose” is intended. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your argument clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some complex sentences, including clauses with “because” and “in order to,” but the range is limited and many sentences are not controlled accurately. The opening is a run-on sentence, joining several independent ideas with commas. Other examples include “Many of businesses fabricate,” which has an incorrect article pattern, and “users report that the formula used in that was same,” where the sentence structure and article use are faulty. In “companies should understand that inorder to make more sales,” the clause is difficult to follow, and punctuation is often missing or misplaced. These errors can make the reader pause to interpret your meaning. Practise separating complete ideas into sentences and checking articles, agreement, and clause structure.
