IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
As far as the topic is concerned, I would like to say that the companies nowadays frequently pormote their products as new to capture public attention in crowded marketplaces. Companies naturally navigate towards items that that provide modern features, offers new and good quality or modern designs. For instance, Company giants like Apple consistently market minor updates to their iphones to sustain buyer excitement and to stay relevant in the phone market .
Modern Market teams rely on novelty because human psychology favours fresh and new clothes than the old ones. In a competitive economy, companies fave thousands of rival items from different companies having minor differences. Emphasizing a new element-whether it is a software upgrade, a safer material or a differnt look-creates a sense of differentiation. This strategy helps a company stay relevant in a competitive market.
This trend has both positive and negative aspects, though it leans toward a negative effect when misused. On the positive side, it drives genuine research and technological advancement, encouraging companies to improve efficiency or reduce environmental impact.
On the contrary, it is largely a negative development because it often promotes overconsumption (buying more things than one actually needs). Companies sometimes use superficial tweaks—like changing a package color or minor flavor—to falsely market an old product as brand new. This misleads consumers and creates unnecessary waste.
In conclusion, Businesses epmhasize product newness to to beat the competition and attract new buyers . While real innovation benefits society, Its obsession with marketing minor changes is mostly a negative development that fuels needless waste

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both questions: you explain that businesses highlight newness to attract attention and distinguish products, and you give a clear overall view that the trend is mostly negative when it involves superficial changes. The Apple example and the discussion of overconsumption and waste make the response relevant. The positive side—innovation improving efficiency or environmental impact—is also acknowledged, but it is less developed than the negative argument. To strengthen the response, explain more fully how genuine innovation benefits consumers or society, and support the claims about misleading packaging with a specific example. Your position is clear, though the opening could state it more directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it moves from reasons for the advertising strategy to positive and negative effects, then concludes with a consistent judgement. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “On the positive side” and “On the contrary” guide the reader. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. The first paragraph combines several ideas, while the second repeats the point about competition without clearly advancing the explanation. The contrast between the positive and negative effects could also be connected more smoothly. Develop each paragraph around one main point and use clearer references between ideas so the progression feels more continuous.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “novelty,” “differentiation,” “technological advancement,” “overconsumption,” and “superficial tweaks.” These choices show an attempt to discuss the issue with some precision. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce control: “pormote,” “fave,” “differnt,” and “epmhasize” appear in key parts of the response. Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “fresh and new clothes than the old ones” and “Company giants.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, and avoid repeating “new” where a more exact term such as “innovative” or “recently introduced” would fit. This would make your vocabulary more reliable and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “items that…provide modern features” and a contrast structure in “While real innovation benefits society…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “items that that provide” repeats the relative pronoun, and “offers” does not agree with the plural subject “items.” The sentence beginning “In a competitive economy” also has an unclear structure around “companies…having minor differences.” In the conclusion, “to to” is repeated, and capitalisation and spacing around punctuation are inconsistent. Proofread for agreement, repeated words, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to practise complex structures.
