In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Most of the business nowadays highlight the new features of their products in advertisement. This is mainly to attract customers. I believe that it is a negative development because it can waste the money of consumers by confusing them.
The primary reason of companies highlighting the new features of their products is to attract the bunch of customers because most of the people love products with modern features. For instance, mobile phones often advertise their modern cameras and advanced features to encourage customers to buy their products. In addition, most of the businesses have to face strong competition, to surpass their competitors most of the company introduce their new features through advertisement.
However, i believe this technique has more disadvantages than the advantages. One of the major drawback of this is that it can create confusion among customers. This is because, when there are variety of options available in the market, people often get confused to choose the suitable product. As a result, people may choose the product that does not meet their needs which can waste their money. For example, smartphones companies advertise new features that many customers may never use. Due to which, customers may purchase more expensive models because they are advertised as new.
In conclusion, businesses emphasise their products new features through advertisement to attract the customers. I believe that this has more negative effects than positive one because customers may get confused by it and end up purchasing expensive products that does not meet their needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the prompt: you explain that businesses highlight new features to attract customers and compete, and you clearly state that you see this as negative. The smartphone examples are relevant, especially the point that buyers may pay more for features they do not need. However, the explanation of competition is brief, and the discussion focuses mainly on consumer confusion and expense; the positive side is not explored, even briefly, before you weigh the development overall. To strengthen the response, develop the reasons more fully—for example, explain how advertising novelty helps a company stand out, then acknowledge a possible benefit such as informing consumers about genuine improvements before explaining why the drawbacks outweigh it. Your position is clear, but some ideas need fuller support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining businesses’ motives, a paragraph presenting your view, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from attracting customers to consumer confusion is easy to follow, and examples are placed where they support the relevant points. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some stronger control through paragraphing and signposting such as “In addition,” “However,” and “In conclusion.” At times, though, links feel mechanical, and “Due to which” is an awkward fragment that interrupts the flow. Some references, such as “this technique,” could be more precise. Use a wider variety of natural transitions and connect each example explicitly to the claim it illustrates.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “modern features,” “strong competition,” “suitable product,” and “meet their needs.” The examples also show an attempt to use more specific language about advertising and smartphones. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “new features,” “products,” and “customers,” while several collocations or word forms are inaccurate: “the bunch of customers,” “the primary reason of,” and “products new features.” These choices make the writing less natural, although the intended meaning remains understandable. Aim for more precise alternatives such as “a wider customer base,” “the main reason for,” and “new product features.” Vary repeated terms with context-appropriate options such as “buyers,” “consumers,” “innovations,” or “product improvements.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including a reason clause (“because most of the people love products…”) and a result structure (“As a result, people may choose…”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some errors in agreement, articles, sentence construction, and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “most of the company introduce” should use a plural subject and verb, while “there are variety of options” needs an article. “Due to which” does not form a complete sentence in this context, and “customers may purchase more expensive models because they are advertised as new” could be punctuated and linked more smoothly. Check subject–verb agreement and singular/plural forms, and revise fragments. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
