Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, businesses advertise that their products are an advancement of previously avaible products. Due to extreme competition and to generate more revenue, businesses might claim that their product is new in some way. I believe that this has a negative impact overall as companies might falsly advertise their products.

We live in an era where starting a business is easy but scaling it is harder. Businesses have to face alot of competition which prompts them to advertise their products as new and as 'the next best thing'. This is becuase in recent times continious development and improvement of products is required to generate more sales. For example, A phone manufacturing company may advertise that their next model of phone has a special protective layer that prevents scratches to get more people to buy it.

This affects the market negatively, large scale businesses might be able to provide the exact product that they advertise, but due to extreme competiton small businesses may start falsly advertising their products. And since the number of small scale businesses is higher the chances of buying a product that does not meet our needs is siginificantly greater. This may only work for a short while as more and more people buy the product, authetic reviews emerge making the overall sales drop.

In conclusion, extreme competition within the markets and to generate more sales businesses emphasise that their products are newer and advanced. This results in small businesses generating a higher frequency of false advertisments just to compete and to generate more revenue.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response addresses both parts of the prompt: you explain that competition and the desire to increase sales encourage businesses to present products as new, and you clearly judge the trend negatively because of misleading claims. The phone example helps illustrate the reason for this marketing approach. However, the discussion of the negative effects is less fully developed: the claim that smaller businesses are more likely to advertise falsely is asserted rather than supported, and the point about reviews reducing sales is introduced briefly. To strengthen the response, explain why novelty claims appeal to consumers and develop the consequences with a specific example or clearer reasoning. Your position is clear, but some ideas need fuller support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs explain the motivation and a possible negative effect, and the conclusion restates the main argument. Ideas generally progress in a logical order, and linking phrases such as “For example,” “This affects the market negatively,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. At times, however, connections are somewhat mechanical, and the relationship between claims could be made clearer. For instance, the move from false advertising by small businesses to the number of such businesses and then to customer reviews needs more explicit explanation. Use referencing and transitions to show how each point follows from the previous one, rather than relying mainly on signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “extreme competition,” “generate more revenue,” “protective layer,” and “authentic reviews,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There is some attempt at more specific language, but the range is not consistently precise or natural. Phrases such as “an advancement of previously available products” and “a higher frequency of false advertisements” sound awkward in context; more natural collocations would make the argument clearer. Spelling errors, including “avaible,” “falsly,” “competiton,” and “authetic,” also reduce accuracy. Aim to use a wider set of accurate expressions for marketing and consumer behaviour, and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “as companies might falsely advertise their products” and a relative clause in “a layer that prevents scratches.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some sentence structures and punctuation need more control. For example, “This affects the market negatively, large scale businesses might be able to provide…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop or a suitable conjunction. The opening phrase “Due to extreme competition and to generate more revenue” also has an uneven grammatical structure. Review clause boundaries and parallel phrasing, while continuing to practise varied complex sentences.
