Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadyas, businesses frequently highlight the novelty of their products in advertisements to attract consumers. This is mainly because people are naturally gravitate towards innovation and companies want to gain a competetive advantage. Although this approach can encourages businesses to improve their items, I believe it is a negative development because it promotes excessive consumption and pollution.

Consumers are often attracted to products that appear more advanced than existing alternatives. By advertising new dseigns, colors or improved technological features, a company can easily pursuade a lay man that their products offer greater value. Furthermore, emphasizing innovation helps companies to compete with their rivals in an increasingly competitive marketplace. For instance, mobile phone companies release a new model of mobile phone every year by just changing the color and size of mobile to appeal people.

However, this advertising strategy promotes unnecessary consumption and waste. Individuals replace the usable products simply because newer versions are available in the market. This not only places financial pressure on consumers but also increases waste, particularly when old electronic devices are discarded. As an illustration, people buy new electronics, such as laptops even when their existing devices still function properly. Consequently, people utilize extra money on new technology, while discarded laptops contribute to electronic waste, which can release harmful substances into the environment if improperly disposed of.

In conclusion, businesses promote the newness of their items to attract customers and remain competitive. This approach can publicise valuable innovations, I consider it predominantly negative as it encourages unnecessary purchases and contributes to waste.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both questions: it explains that novelty attracts consumers and helps firms compete, then clearly judges the trend negatively because it encourages unnecessary purchases and electronic waste. The position is consistent from the introduction to the conclusion, and the examples of annual phone releases and replacing functioning laptops make the argument relevant. This meets the core requirements well. However, the explanation of why businesses stress novelty is less fully developed than the discussion of its harms; the phone example, for instance, could explain more clearly how perceived improvements influence buying decisions or sales. The positive aspect—that advertising can publicise valuable innovation—is mentioned only briefly. Developing these points more evenly would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states the position, two body paragraphs explain the reasons and consequences, and a conclusion restates the view. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “However,” and “Consequently” help readers follow the argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the examples are placed alongside the points they support. Some connections are less smooth, however. The final sentence of the conclusion joins the benefit of innovation and the negative judgement with a comma, making the relationship between them unclear. There is also some repetition of “new” and “products/items.” More precise referencing and a wider range of natural transitions would make cohesion less mechanical and strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the topic and includes relevant expressions such as “competitive advantage,” “technological features,” “financial pressure,” and “electronic waste.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the writer attempts some topic-specific language. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “Nowadyas,” “competetive,” “dseigns,” and “pursuade.” Some collocations are also unnatural: “appeal people,” “utilize extra money on,” and “publicise valuable innovations” do not express the intended meanings idiomatically. Repeated use of “new” and “products” also limits flexibility. Improving spelling and learning common collocations for consumer behaviour and advertising would help the vocabulary sound more controlled and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although this approach…” and a conditional clause in “if improperly disposed of.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the writer attempts to connect causes and consequences within longer structures. Some grammatical errors persist, though. In the opening, “people are naturally gravitate” incorrectly combines a finite verb with “are”; “can encourages” has the wrong verb form after a modal; and “their products offer” has unclear agreement with the singular “a company.” The conclusion also contains a comma splice between “innovations” and “I consider.” Review modal verb patterns, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries, while retaining the complex structures already attempted.
