In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In their advertisements, businesses often show that their products are new and up to date than their competitors. This tactic is proven to be helpful as capturing market through this way is quite easy. I personally think that this is a negative development.

Every product that is launched in a competitive market needs to stay relevant. Businesses often use marketing and advertisements as their creative tactic to show individuals that this product is new. It is easy to attract audience toward such schemes and businesses excel in capturing market this way. An example for this might be the advertisements for gaming consoles by Sony. Their claims suggest that you are buying something that is not available anywhere in the market. But it is far from the truth, as their competitors offer the same specifications in relatively fair prices.

This idealogy of business advertisements has led to a number of negative effects. New products should not be the reason for anyone to buy anything. A product would be successful if it completes the task that it was supposed to do. The reason for its success should not be nature of it being new. Businesses should aim to research what the their audiences need. They should take surveys before launching a product in the market. Rather than getting new products, everyone should get what they actually need. An example for this might the food businesses. They take surverys from their customers and change their menus and services accordingly.

In conclusion, businesses do advertise their products as something new. The main reason for that is to capture more audience by these false claims. Contrary to this, businesses should aim to read their audience and come up with products that their customers need.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response addresses both parts of the question: you explain that businesses stress novelty to attract customers and clearly state that you see this as negative. The Sony console example supports your point about promotional claims, while the food-business example illustrates your preference for responding to customer needs. This meets the task well, and the position remains consistent. However, the explanation of why novelty appeals to consumers is brief, and the claim that businesses make “false claims” is stronger than the evidence provided. The food example also focuses more on customer research than on the effects of novelty-focused advertising. Develop these points with clearer reasoning and specific evidence to make the argument more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from explaining the marketing tactic to arguing against it is easy to follow, and phrases such as “An example for this” help signal supporting examples. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “Contrary to this” does not accurately introduce the conclusion, since it restates your position rather than contrasting with it. The second body paragraph also moves quickly from product quality to surveys and then to food businesses, so the relationship between these ideas could be made more explicit. Use more precise transitions and develop each paragraph around one central point to strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “competitive market,” “advertisements,” “specifications,” and “audiences,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “capture the market.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “helpful as capturing market,” “attract audience toward such schemes,” and “relatively fair prices” do not sound natural in context. “Idealogy” and “surverys” are spelling errors, and “new and up to date than” is not an appropriate comparison. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling; this would make your vocabulary more precise and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure “A product would be successful if it completes the task” and the subordinate clause “as their competitors offer…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical problems remain, however. In “new and up to date than their competitors,” the comparison is not formed correctly; “It is easy to attract audience” needs an article or plural noun; and “An example for this might the food businesses” is missing “be.” The phrase “what the their audiences need” also contains an unnecessary determiner. Review articles, comparison structures and sentence completeness, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
