IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In recent times, advertising has become increasingly common in business growth. I believe this is a positive development because promotion helps companies succeed because it drives innovation and research, as well as economic growth. This essay explains why I believe that promotion is key to business growth.
The primary reason why this trend is beneficial is that advertising leads to innovation and research in a company to manufacture goods. This is because in the past, there were several companies selling the same products with no fear of failure, but now they are working on creative items to stand out among competitors. For instance, if a bakery sells cookies for the next ten years, it is most likely to fail if no other items are added. Consequently, it is evident that all businesses have depended on innovation.
Another compelling illustration is that it promotes economic growth.Higher consumer spendings boost business revenue, creates more jobs, and stimulates the economy. A clear example of this can be seen in firms that promote their products earn more than others.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that promotion is a positive development which helps companies' economic growth and drives innovation and creativity. Ultimately, in the long run, this shift will have more impact.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
Your position is clear: you consider the emphasis on novelty a positive development, and you give two relevant reasons—innovation and economic growth. However, the response only partially addresses the prompt because it does not explain clearly why businesses specifically highlight that their products are new; it shifts instead to the general benefits of advertising. The examples are also brief or general: the bakery example suggests a need to add products, while the claim that firms promoting products earn more is not supported with detail. The response is 43 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop the reasons with specific links to novelty-focused advertising and fuller examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion, and the main ideas are generally easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “The primary reason,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression is uneven: the second body paragraph begins “Another compelling illustration” but introduces economic growth as a new reason rather than an illustration of the previous point. The introduction also repeats the idea that promotion supports business growth without clearly setting up the two reasons. Improve the links between claims and examples, and use paragraph openings that accurately show whether you are adding a reason or illustrating one.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “innovation,” “competitors,” “consumer,” “revenue,” and “stimulates the economy,” which helps communicate the general argument. There is also some variation in phrasing, such as “stand out among competitors.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or awkward, including “Higher consumer spendings” and “firms that promote their products earn more than others.” “Promotion” is also repeated where the task specifically concerns advertising products as new. Choose more precise terms for novelty-focused marketing and check natural collocations and word forms. For example, “consumer spending” is more idiomatic than “consumer spendings,” and a concrete description of how a new feature attracts buyers would make the vocabulary more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “if a bakery sells cookies for the next ten years, it is most likely to fail if no other items are added.” Most sentences are understandable, and the overall meaning can be followed. However, control is inconsistent in places. In “Higher consumer spendings boost business revenue, creates more jobs,” the subject is plural, so the verbs need to agree (“boost,” “create,” and “stimulate”). The opening sentence, “advertising has become increasingly common in business growth,” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between “common” and “in business growth.” There is a missing space after the full stop in “growth.Higher.” Review agreement and sentence construction, and proofread punctuation while continuing to practise varied sentence patterns.
