In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, many businesses highlight the new features of their products in advertisements. They do this to attract costumers and increase their sales. In my opinion, this is a positive development because it encourge companies to imrove their products, although it can some time mislead consumers. There are several reasons why companies focus on new features in their advertising. Firstly, people are often interested in trying new things. When a company introduces a new product with a new design or better features, customers may want to buy it. Secondly, businesses face strong competition in the market. By showing their products are new or improved, they can attract more consumers than their competitors. For example, mobile phone companies often advertise new cameras, longer battery time and faster performance to encourage people to purchase their latest model. I belive this trend is generally positive because it motivates companies to develop better products. As a result, customers may benefit from improvement quality and more choice. For instance, modern washing machines use less water and electricity than many older models. Advertising these improvements helps people understand the benefits of new technology. However, there are also some disadvantages. Some companies clam that their products are new even when the changes are very small. This may encourage people to spend money on things they do not really need. For example, a person might buy a new mobile phone simply because it has a slightly different design. Therefore, customers should compare products carefully before making a purchase. In conclusion, businesses emphasise new features in advertising mainly to attract customers and remain competitve. Although this practice can some times encourage unnecessary spending, I belive it is a positive development overall because it promotes innovation and give consumers more information about improved products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: it explains that businesses promote new features to attract customers and compete, and it clearly judges the trend as positive overall while acknowledging possible unnecessary spending. The examples of phone upgrades and more efficient washing machines help support the main points. Your position remains consistent from the introduction to the conclusion. To strengthen the response further, develop the explanation of why novelty appeals to consumers—for example, how advertising creates a perception of better value—and make the discussion of misleading claims more specific. Some points, such as the benefit of “more choice,” are asserted rather than fully explained, so a little more analysis would make the support more consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining businesses’ motives, a paragraph supporting your view, a counterpoint, and a conclusion. Ideas progress logically, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the relationships between points easy to follow. Examples are generally placed beside the claims they illustrate. To make the organisation more polished, rely less on formulaic transitions and use more varied links between ideas. You could also connect the counterargument more explicitly to your overall judgement, explaining why the risk of unnecessary spending does not outweigh the benefits of innovation. Overall, the progression is clear and cohesive, with room for more flexible linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “strong competition,” “latest model,” “improvement,” and “unnecessary spending,” and the meaning remains clear throughout. However, the range and control are uneven, with several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions: “costumers,” “encourge,” “imrove,” “clam,” and “competitve” should be corrected, while “longer battery time” and “improvement quality” are not natural collocations. Repetition of “new,” “products,” and “customers” also limits flexibility. To move beyond this level, check spelling carefully and build a wider set of accurate topic-specific phrases, such as “extended battery life,” “product innovation,” and “consumer demand.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although this practice can sometimes encourage unnecessary spending…” and a relative clause in “products that are new.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the paragraph structure helps the reader follow the argument. Some grammatical control is still needed: “customers may benefit from improvement quality” has an incorrect noun phrase, and “innovation and give consumers” lacks parallel verb structure after “because it promotes.” The sentence “I believe this trend is generally positive because…” is a sound model for expressing a reason, but similar structures should be checked for agreement and parallelism. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the range already demonstrated.
