Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, innovation have become a selling point for many products, many businesses now are emphasising that their products are innovative and new in some way. While i agree on the fact that innovation leads to the production of better products of their existing versions, whereas this can also lead to companies only empasising on the advestising aspect of the product which can lead to the production of false advertisements.

In the current era, business firms are emphasising on the novelty of their products because advertising the novelty helps the brand to distinguish themselves from rival competition. Different companies compete over sales of similar products. Therefore, in order to differenciate their products from similar products of rival companies, firms employ the tactic of advertising their products as novel and innovative than other similar items. For example, pepsi and coca cola are both carbonated drink brands who compete in the battle of empasising the inovation of their respective products to gain an edge over its rival company.

While the healthy competition may prove to be useful in many ways such as the actual improvement of products, thus benefitting the customer. However , the negative implications of this endeavor outweigh the advantages and should not be neglected . In my opinion, this competiton can lead to negative development because it makes buisnesses put out false advertisements to gain an edge over its competitiors instead of actually improving their products, which can lead to misleading purchasing decisions made by the consumers. Moreover , this advertising tactic leads to increased consumerism.

In conclusion, emphasis on the innovation of the product for competition could lead to positive developments, whereas the negative implications are more prominent than the postive ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain that businesses stress novelty to distinguish products from competitors, and you judge the development as negative overall because of misleading advertising and increased consumerism. Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion. The Pepsi and Coca-Cola example is relevant, but it mainly illustrates competition rather than showing a specific innovation or its effect on buyers. The benefits are also only briefly acknowledged as “the actual improvement of products,” while the risks receive more explanation. To strengthen the response, develop both the reason for this advertising trend and your evaluation with a concrete example and clearer explanation of how novelty claims influence purchasing decisions. This would make the ideas more fully supported and balanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining the business motive, a paragraph evaluating the effects, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Therefore,” “For example,” and “Moreover” help show relationships between ideas. However, some connections are awkward or mechanical. In particular, “While the healthy competition may prove to be useful… However” creates an incomplete contrast structure, and the conclusion repeats the main judgement without adding a final implication. Some references, such as “this endeavor” and “this advertising tactic,” could be more precise about which practice or consequence they refer to. For stronger progression, make each paragraph’s central point explicit and connect the example directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “selling point,” “novelty,” “rival competition,” “false advertisements,” and “consumerism.” These choices make the main argument clear, and you attempt less common terms such as “distinguish” and “implications.” However, several spelling errors—“empasising,” “advestising,” “differenciate,” and “competitiors”—reduce accuracy. There are also awkward or imprecise collocations, including “battle of emphasising the innovation” and “advertising their products as novel and innovative than” other items. Aim for more natural combinations and avoid repeating “products” and “similar” so often. More precise vocabulary for product features and consumer responses would help express the argument with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because advertising the novelty helps…”) and a conditional result (“which can lead to misleading purchasing decisions”). The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “innovation have become” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “While I agree…, whereas…” combines two contrasting structures incorrectly. The sentence beginning “While the healthy competition…” is also left without a complete main clause before “However.” There are further issues with articles and agreement in “brands who compete” and “gain an edge over its rival company.” Improve control of sentence boundaries and contrast clauses, then check agreement and punctuation. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make the argument easier to follow.
