Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's fast-paced world, companies tends to highlight the novelty of their products in advertisements. This essay will examine the reasons behind this trend and explain why I believe it is a negative development.

To commence with, although all companies showcase their products, newly launched products take precedence as companies prioritise the novelty of their advertisements. Furthermore, this strategic focus on innovation really inspires customers to explore these new offerings, effectively capturing their attention and generating excitement around the launch. For instance, if we mention apple, as they consistently use innovative and highly creative advertising campaign for their new product launches, which really encourage people to get more excited and customers curiosity becomes immense.

Additionally, I friendly believe that this continuous emphasis on product novelty is a negative development overall. firstly, it fosters a culture of hyper-consumerism and premature obsolescence. when advertisement urge customers to buy latest version products, people are encouraged to discard perfectly functional items, leading to excessive electronic and material waste that severely harms the environment.

In conclusion, although the advertisements capture customers attention and stimulate customers demand in a crowded marketplace, this trend ultimately yields negative consequences by encouraging unsustainable consumption habits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain that novelty attracts attention and creates excitement, and you clearly state that the trend is negative because it encourages overconsumption and waste. However, the reasons for businesses’ emphasis on newness are only partly explained, and the Apple example is vague rather than showing specifically how an advertisement promotes novelty. The environmental point is relevant but would benefit from a concrete example and fuller explanation of how advertising leads consumers to replace usable products. The response is also below the required 250 words, so there is limited space to develop and support your ideas. Expand both the explanation of the business motive and the consequences, while maintaining your clear position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on why businesses promote new products, a paragraph explaining your negative view, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Additionally,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. This gives the essay coherent progression, and the reader can follow your position. To move further, make the links between claims and examples more explicit: the Apple sentence is difficult to follow and does not clearly show how its advertising supports the point about attracting customers. Also use paragraph-internal transitions to develop each idea rather than relying mainly on opening linkers. Check referencing and punctuation so that sentence boundaries and connections remain clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “novelty,” “innovation,” “hyper-consumerism,” “premature obsolescence,” and “electronic and material waste.” These choices help communicate the central argument and show some willingness to use less common language. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions, such as “I friendly believe,” “customers curiosity becomes immense,” and “stimulate customers demand.” Some repetition of “customers” and “new” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural collocations and precise phrasing, for example, describe advertising as “sparking consumer interest” or “encouraging demand.” Proofread word forms and possessives, and choose vocabulary that expresses the relationship between advertising and consumer behaviour clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession with “although” and a cause-and-effect clause beginning “when advertisement urge customers.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some errors in agreement, articles, sentence construction, and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “companies tends” should have a plural verb, while “if we mention apple, as they…” is an incomplete and awkwardly joined sentence. The sentence beginning “when advertisement urge” also needs an article or plural noun and a verb that agrees with its subject. Capitalise sentence openings such as “Firstly” and proper names such as “Apple.” Continue using complex sentences, but check each one for a complete main clause and accurate subject–verb agreement.
