IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

These days , business organizations highlight that their products are new in few ways .

I feel it can lead to negative development in society .

The reasons why companies use this stratedy is to stay ahead of their competitors and to have good brand image from people perspetive .This is because , technological advertisements bought various advertisement techniques and all their rivalries use various kind of methods as well .But it can lead to negative development in society as they just sell the same content as before but they just emphasise on few ingredients they use .

For example , boost a product owned by hindustan uniliver company , advertise that it provides stamina for children , but in reality if checked the ingredients there are no any potential ingredient composed in the product .

Another reason why it can cause downfall is , companies are ready to move to any extent to sell their products regardless of impact it can create on people .For instance , the packaged drinking water bottle called Himalyan water is popular brand , they say that water is fetched from Himalayas itself ,and even people do believe that and they pay thrice the amount of regular water bottle costs .When seen the ingredients its the same as regular water bottles .

This is all because companies are focusing on brand image , and if people belive its a famous brand ,they dont think for second option and they spend unnecessary money .

To conclude , it is agreed to fact that there might be positive development but I strogly think there is false development .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You answer both parts of the question: you explain that businesses stress novelty to compete and build a brand image, and you clearly judge the trend negatively. The examples of Boost and Himalayan water help illustrate your concern that advertising claims can encourage consumers to pay more for products that may not be meaningfully different. However, the explanation of why novelty is emphasised is less developed than the criticism of its effects. The response also shifts from the specific claim that products are “new in some way” to broader concerns about misleading ingredients and branding; explain more directly how novelty attracts buyers or increases sales. Develop the examples with clearer evidence and avoid presenting unverified claims as established facts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an overall structure, with an opening position, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. The examples are placed near the points they are intended to support, and phrases such as “For example” and “Another reason” signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is not always clear: the second body paragraph begins “Another reason why it can cause downfall,” although it mainly gives another example of misleading branding rather than a distinct reason. The conclusion introduces a possible positive development without explaining it, which weakens the final progression. Some linking is mechanical, and references such as “it” and “this” can be unclear. Give each paragraph one distinct purpose and use transitions that show the precise relationship between claims and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “competitors,” “brand image,” “ingredients,” and “unnecessary money,” so the main ideas can be understood. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning less precise. For example, “new in few ways” and “same content as before” do not express the idea of product novelty naturally, while “rivalries” is not the right noun for competing businesses. Spelling errors such as “stratedy,” “perspetive,” and “belive” are also noticeable. Build a more precise set of expressions for advertising and consumer behaviour, and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause beginning “This is because” and a contrast with “but.” This allows you to communicate a clear overall position, but control is inconsistent: complex sentences often contain several errors, and punctuation sometimes makes the relationships between clauses difficult to follow. Examples include “The reasons why companies use this stratedy is” and “there are no any potential ingredient composed in the product,” where agreement and sentence construction are faulty. Articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “a popular brand” and the long sentence beginning “When seen the ingredients.” Practise building accurate clauses first, then combine them using clear punctuation and a wider range of structures.
