IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Marketing is a crucial way to boost any business in todays time. Proper advertising and making commercial helps the business flourish.

I think buisness owners who usually emphasise on their products being new in some or the other way is positive development. As mentioned earlier about the marketing stratagies advertising in new ways makes any product unique in it self too. In my opinion this scenario occurs due to the competition between the businesses on proving which one stands out and is appealing to the costumers.

On supporting the stament of the emphasis being positive is because I personally belong from a marketing background, where paying attention to details and focusing on making advertisements unique and out of the box is neccesary for increasing the sales. Further more the loyal consumers of that particular business also prefer to have variety in the products they purchase, for example a skin care company produces vitamin C serum which was good in its own way and was satisfactory for the frequent buyers. But the sales eventually decreased as other brand also launched the similar kind of product but with one or two extra ingridients which made a huge impact. Further more that company understood the strategy of the competitor and made required changes in the advertisements and developing a better version of it due to which the sales jumped higher again.

To conclude I would like to say that any business should emphasise on the new components or any new product in order to stand out from the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain that businesses highlight novelty to stand out from competitors and give a clear view that this is positive. The skincare example also supports your point by showing how a rival product affected sales and prompted a response. These relevant ideas meet the task well, and your position is apparent. However, the explanation of why businesses generally emphasise newness is brief, while much of the body focuses on one company’s marketing response. The distinction between advertising a product as new and actually developing a new or improved product could also be clearer. To strengthen the response, explain more fully why novelty attracts consumers and consider a possible drawback before reinforcing your judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph explaining your position and example, and a conclusion. The skincare example follows the discussion of competition and gives the main body a logical direction. However, progression is sometimes mechanical: phrases such as “As mentioned earlier,” “Further more,” and “To conclude” announce connections rather than showing them naturally. The opening also repeats the general idea of advertising without clearly setting up the two questions. Within the long example, the sequence from falling sales to the company’s response is understandable, but the relationship between product changes and advertising is not always clear. Use more precise links and divide the explanation into clearer stages to make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “competition,” “loyal consumers,” “variety,” “advertisements,” and “sales,” and the reader can understand your main points. There are also attempts at less common expressions such as “out of the box” and “stands out.” However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural combinations are noticeable, including “buisness,” “stratagies,” “costumers,” “ingridients,” and “increasing the sales.” Some wording is vague or repetitive, such as “new in some or the other way” and “good in its own way.” Aim for accurate spelling and more precise collocations, for example, “differentiate itself from competitors” and “increase sales.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and suitable for an academic argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a skin care company produces vitamin C serum which was good…” and a cause-and-effect construction describing the competitor’s product. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “business owners who usually emphasise … is” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “I personally belong from a marketing background” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. There are also issues with articles and number, as in “other brand,” and with sentence boundaries: the opening fragment “Proper advertising and making commercial helps…” is not a complete, well-formed sentence. Practise building accurate complex sentences and checking agreement, articles, and punctuation while retaining your range of structures.
