Student answer (Band 6.5)

In current time, businesses tend to prioritize that their products are novel in some way in their advertisements. The main reason behind this strategy is to compete in the market with their rival businesses. Also, they do this type of advertisements to increase sales and bring new customers. In my opinion, this is a negative development for the market and our society in a broader aspect.

There are a lot of competition for a single product in the market nowdays. Among all the products, customers are generally more attracted to those with new feature. To capitalize this tendency of people, companies advertise their product in such a way that the customers find something new in it. To add with this, promoting any product in a new way is an effective strategy to increase the sales. Furthermore, to attract new customers, companies look for this strategy. For example, recently Samsung launched a new version of a smartphone which was almost similar to the prior one. They added a new privacy feature in it and all the promotions of the phone were based on this new technology. In response to this campaign, many customers from Apple company got interested and they switched into Samsung. Thus it turned out to be a succesful marketing.

However, this specific strategy can bring some bad consequences. To begin with, this type of advertisements can easily trick a customer and they can end up buying the stuff which is not useful in time. In addition, the companies might include a false information into the advertisements to bring newness. Once a telecom company claimed in their advertisements that they will offer first 5G network in Bangladesh. In a result, many people around the country bought their sim only to find out invalid 5G network throughout many places around the country. Furthermore, compaines tend to increase their product price by promoting this kind of advertisement.

To sum up, although there is a growing trend of advertisements focusing on new aspects of product, I strongly believe this is a negative practice because of its harmful effects on general people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain that businesses highlight novelty to compete, increase sales and attract customers, and you clearly state that you view this as negative. The Samsung example supports the marketing explanation, while the Bangladesh 5G example illustrates how claims about new features can mislead consumers. These examples make the response relevant and give your position a clear basis. To strengthen the discussion further, develop the final point about higher prices: explain how novelty-focused advertising can lead consumers to pay more for small or unnecessary changes. Some claims, such as that customers are generally attracted to new features, would also benefit from qualification or further explanation rather than being presented broadly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: the introduction presents the reasons and your view, the second paragraph explains the business motives, the third develops the drawbacks, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore” help readers follow the sequence. The examples are placed in relevant paragraphs and connected to the points being made. At times, however, the links feel somewhat formulaic, and several ideas in the first body paragraph are listed rather than developed in a more connected chain. For stronger cohesion, vary the transitions and use clearer references between claims and examples, while explaining how each example supports the central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “compete in the market,” “capitalize this tendency,” “privacy feature,” and “false information.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the reader can understand the examples. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “a lot of competition,” “new feature,” “bring newness,” and “switched into Samsung.” Spelling slips, including “nowdays,” “succesful,” and “compaines,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural topic-specific phrasing and check spelling carefully. For example, describe firms as facing “intense competition,” and say customers “switched to Samsung”; this would make the argument sound more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “although there is a growing trend…” and “which was almost similar to the prior one.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, however. For example, “There are a lot of competition” has a subject–verb and countability problem, while “customers are generally more attracted to those with new feature” needs a plural or article. Other examples include “they switched into Samsung” and “a false information.” Review agreement, articles, countable and uncountable nouns, and prepositions. More consistently accurate control of these patterns would improve the clarity of your otherwise varied sentences.
