IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

At present, many businessmen tend to advertise their products as unique and different from the ones that already exist in the market. According to me, it is done due to the keen nature of buyers to purchase uncommon things, which can be a positive development.

The relation between the sellers and the consumers have always been established on the law of supply and demand. Generally, people are more willing to try new things rather than buying the same old thing all over again. Moreover,as every society somehow goes through up and coming changes, the residents find their lifestyles alternating with it. That being said, the previous appliances or products do not fascinate them that much. However,it can also occur if one lives in a close knit society, where peer pressure makes them buy trendy things and to gain accaptance in the social groups.

The impact of this can be considered both as positive and negative. Firstly, if we talk about the positive sides, the modification is necessary in terms of buying things. The human environment changes every now and then. Some products do not meet the requirements that may be needed to do a specific task. For example, camera films are no longer used widely, rather than that mobile phones are now handy. So it feels natural for a person to have mobile phone instead of investing on camera fims.In addition, it also helps the industry to go on and the sell personnels can largely be benefitted and the employment increases also. On the contrary, the negative side can be the pressure it puts on someone. The standard somehow becomes biased.Childrens and teenagers sometimes make irrational demands on buying things due to their belief that the claimed new things will make them have more peer accepatnce.

In conclusion, the advertising of products to be unique helps the companies selll their items at a larger quantity . Though , it has both advantages and disadvantages , in my opinion, the advantages overweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions: you explain that buyers are attracted to novelty and give a view that this is positive overall, while also acknowledging pressure on young people as a drawback. The examples of replacing camera film with mobile phones and teenagers seeking peer acceptance make the discussion relevant. However, the explanation of why businesses emphasise newness is not fully developed: the link between changing lifestyles, consumer demand and companies’ advertising choices could be made more explicit. The positive effects on employment are also asserted rather than explained, and the conclusion mainly repeats the position instead of drawing together the reasons. Develop each main point with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and a specific supporting example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining consumer interest, a discussion of positive and negative effects, and a conclusion. The progression from consumer demand to consequences is generally understandable, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “Firstly,” and “On the contrary” help guide the reader. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or the relationships between ideas are unclear. For example, the move from changing lifestyles to peer pressure is abrupt, and the positive and negative arguments are crowded into one long paragraph. Separate these effects into distinct paragraphs and use clearer references to show how each point supports your position. Check spacing after punctuation to make the presentation easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “supply and demand,” “peer pressure,” “requirements,” and “employment,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “keen nature of buyers” and “close knit society,” but some combinations are unnatural or imprecise. Several spelling errors—such as “accaptance,” “fims,” “selll,” and “overweigh”—also reduce accuracy. Some wording is vague, including “the standard somehow becomes biased,” which does not clearly identify the disadvantage. Aim for more natural collocations and precise terms, and proofread spelling. This would make your vocabulary more flexible and accurate without requiring unnecessarily complex words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “rather than,” “where,” and “though,” and most of your meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, however. For example, “The relation … have always been established” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “the residents find their lifestyles alternating with it” uses an awkward grammatical construction. There are also issues with articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, as in “Childrens and teenagers” and “every now and then. Some products.” Review agreement and noun forms, and make sure punctuation separates complete sentences. More consistent control of these patterns would strengthen the range of structures you already attempt.
