IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some companies advertise that their products are new in some way is a positive development.

Example: 1

Evolution of Smartphones: At first, we had telephones which helped only to make calls. Then, we had phones with keys. That helped to make calls, to play games, to message, etc., Now, we have our smartphones. It has maps, video call, youtube, chrome, etc., This is because of the companies who comes with new product to the people. Little bit of improvement in product makes a huge difference.

Example: 2

Evolution of Laptops: Before the laptops have discovered, we had our computer. The setup for the computer occupies more space. We need cpu, keyboard, mouse, etc., Later on they found laptops. Laptops comes with keys and mouse. It is also easy to carry and there is no setup needed for this. These evolutions didn't come quickly. Day by day, little by little, they have made products better in some way.

Example: 3

Food product: When we are talking about products, food is also included. I will not accept the first statement when it comes to food product. Nowadays, people are getting unknown disease. That's all because of those packed items. Food advertisement are more colorful and appetising to eat. Mainly it affect the children. I think it's better to bring chemical free and healthy food rather than advertising that their products are new in some way.

India is a developing country. We still need improvements in technologies. When we are talking about technology, it's also the products that are manufacturing. If we are bringing new products, it helps us in importing and exporting business.

Conclusion: I will not agree that it is a positive development in all the cases. Comparitively, it's a positive development in advertising their product are new in some way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear overall view that advertising novelty is not positive in every case, and the smartphone and laptop examples are relevant to how product development can improve convenience. However, the task asks both why businesses emphasise newness and whether this is positive or negative. The reasons for the advertising strategy are not really explained; instead, the response mainly describes technological change. Your position also shifts: the opening calls it positive, while the conclusion says it is not positive in all cases, without clearly weighing the two sides. The food example introduces a useful concern about health, but its claims are not developed. Explain the marketing motive and support a consistent judgement with fuller reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable sequence, moving from technology examples to food and then a conclusion, and the numbered examples make the separate topics easy to identify. However, the overall progression is limited: the examples are presented one after another rather than being linked to a central explanation of why businesses advertise products as new. The opening sentence does not clearly introduce the essay’s position, and the conclusion repeats a qualified opinion without resolving the contrast between the opening and final view. Connect each paragraph to a main argument, use clearer topic sentences, and make references such as “This” and “those packed items” more precise. The repeated “Example” structure also makes the organisation feel list-like.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main examples, including “smartphones,” “importing and exporting,” and “chemical free and healthy food.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, which sometimes makes the intended meaning less clear. For instance, “companies who comes with new product to the people” and “advertising their product are new” do not express the ideas idiomatically. “Unknown disease” is also vague in the context of food-related health concerns. Aim for more precise language about marketing, innovation, and consumer health, and check word forms and collocations. More varied vocabulary would help you explain the business reasons rather than relying mainly on repeated references to “new products” and “improvements.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Your response communicates its main points through mostly simple sentence patterns, with some attempts to add detail using clauses such as “When we are talking about products, food is also included.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to follow. Examples include “Some companies advertise … is a positive development,” “Before the laptops have discovered,” and “Laptops comes with keys.” There are also problems with subject–verb agreement and sentence construction in “Food advertisement are more colorful” and “Mainly it affect the children.” Practise forming clear complex sentences and check agreement, verb forms, articles, and punctuation. Accurate sentence patterns will make your reasoning easier to understand.
