IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadays businesses advertise their products as new and unique not copied product. This is due to rise their business as compared to their competitors. I think it is a negative development.
On the one hand, Businesses copies products from other brands and give them some new names and advertise it in a way that the people would be attracted. For example, a nepali noddle named 2pm was really famous and after a year a new noddle was made by a different company naming it as current. There was no difference in packaging and price infact the taste of the current was not good as compared to that of 2pm. Brand should experiment and bring out different flavours and a good taste so the business will grow in a better way. It mostly affects on childrens because they expect the products to be as same shown in advertisements.
By contrast, it also has some advantage because if you copy other's business and you present it to the world by just inhancinv the flavour than it would benifit the business in a great way. For instance, there was a chips named lays which was really famous in Nepal because of it's international branding. People use to love the different flavours of lays. After many years a nepali brand produced a chips named naga chilli and it became so famous among nepali people that they fogot lays existed. The flavour was inhanced the shape of the chips was large and it also had lots of spices. So even if the product is copied if you could make it in a better way it can be financially advantageous.
In conclusion, even though there are some advantages of advertising of business, I strongly believe that it's disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both questions: you suggest that businesses stress novelty to attract customers and outperform competitors, and you clearly state that you see this as a negative development. The examples of the noodle brands and the chips illustrate imitation and product improvement, so the response remains relevant. However, the explanation of why businesses emphasise that products are new is brief, and the first example mainly discusses copying and taste rather than how advertising claims affect consumers. Your negative position is clear, but the second body paragraph gives substantial space to the advantages, while the conclusion does not explain why the disadvantages outweigh them. Develop the reasons for your judgement more fully and connect each example directly to the question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The contrast between the paragraphs is signalled by “On the one hand” and “By contrast,” and the examples help make the discussion easy to follow overall. However, the progression of the argument is not always clear: the first paragraph moves from copying to product experimentation and then to children’s expectations without fully linking these points. “By contrast” also introduces an advantage, but the relationship between that point and your stated negative position could be clearer. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s main claim, and add linking explanations showing how each example supports your overall view. This would make the organisation feel less mechanical and the conclusion more connected to the discussion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “competitors,” “advertisements,” “flavours,” “financially advantageous” and “branding.” These choices allow you to discuss competition, product quality and commercial benefits. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “new and unique not copied product,” “rise their business,” and “inhanced the flavour.” Spelling errors, including “noddle,” “benifit” and “fogot,” also reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for more natural phrases such as “differentiate their products,” “increase sales,” and “improve the flavour.” Checking spelling and choosing precise expressions will make your ideas clearer and give you more flexibility when discussing advertising and consumer behaviour.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if you could make it in a better way it can be financially advantageous” and a relative clause in “a chips named lays which was really famous.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Businesses copies products” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “Brand should experiment” needs a plural or an article. There are also problems with articles and plurals in “a chips” and “a nepali noddle,” and the conditional sentence shifts from “could” to “can.” Work on agreement, articles and consistent verb forms, and punctuate longer sentences carefully. Greater control of these patterns would make your varied sentence attempts more accurate.
