In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Businesses often highlight in their advertising that their products are unique in some way. I think it is a positive development to make the target market curious and to get the attention of various niche groups.
To begin with, the manufacturing industries first analyse the different trends and gaps in the market. Secondly, they study the niche groups who need particular assistance or features. Then they make their products accordingly with some sort of new and special feature. For instance, if a particular skincare brand does not include salicylic acid in their products and customers report complaints about its absence. The other cosmetic brand makes sure to add it to their products and they highlights new addition during commercialization and marketing to gain customer's attention. It makes the brand popular among those demanding groups because 90% of the public is conscious about their skin.
Many brands arouse a sense of curiosity in their buyers by advertising commercials saying, "The wait is over, something new will come soon. Stay tuned". Customers stayed alert for the new products to test them. For example, when Shan Masala noticed people got bored of their previous spices, they added a diverse range of new spices for almost all the recipes to make customers engaged. These additions and alterations according to the customer's buying habits are significant in different ways. Initially, it is essential for economic growth for the company; secondly, company's products become prevalent among buyers and lastly it attracts more niche groups in future. These emphasised changes make businesses in demand in the long run.
In conclusion, it is a positive development for ventures and micro-startups to advertise that their products are specific and new in some way to gain public attention, identity and profit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you explain why businesses promote novelty, and you clearly regard this as positive. The discussion of responding to customer needs, illustrated by the skincare example, is relevant, while the Shan Masala example supports the idea that new products can renew interest. However, the reasons are not equally developed. The claim that novelty helps “economic growth for the company” and attracts future niche groups is asserted rather than explained, and the positive effects are emphasised without considering any limits or clarifying why this development is beneficial more broadly. Develop each main reason with a clear explanation of its impact, and make the examples more precise and directly tied to the question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from identifying customer needs to creating curiosity, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in sequencing examples and consequences. However, transitions can feel mechanical, particularly the repeated “firstly/secondly” pattern and the list “Initially… secondly… lastly.” Some references are also unclear: “These additions and alterations” could refer to several different changes, and “they” in the skincare example has an uncertain antecedent. Use more natural links between claims and examples, and make references explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “target market,” “niche groups,” “trends,” “gaps in the market,” and “buying habits.” These choices help explain how businesses identify demand and promote new features. You also attempt less common expressions, but some are imprecise or unnatural in context: “commercialization and marketing” is awkward here, “prevalent among buyers” does not naturally express popularity, and “specific and new” is vague. There are also word-form and collocation slips, such as “they highlights” and “make customers engaged.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Aim for more natural business and consumer collocations, and choose vocabulary that states the intended meaning directly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional example beginning “if a particular skincare brand…” and a longer sentence explaining the benefits of product changes. Meaning is generally clear, and the paragraphing gives you opportunities to vary sentence patterns. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “they highlights,” the verb does not agree with its subject; “the other cosmetic brand makes sure to add it to their products” shifts between singular and plural reference. The sentence beginning “For instance, if…” is a fragment because the conditional clause is not completed as a full sentence. There are also article and possessive issues in “company’s products” and “gain customer's attention.” Check agreement and sentence completeness, especially in longer examples.
