Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies reasons businesses promote products as new, including attracting customers, increasing sales and responding to competition, and it gives a position that this is positive overall. However, the task asks both why this happens and whether it is a positive or negative development; the explanation of why is only partly clear, while the positive judgement is asserted rather than properly evaluated. The discussion of variety, prices and profits is repetitive and not sufficiently explained, and the survey example is not connected convincingly to the argument. The final point about banning advertisements for expensive toys introduces a different issue without explaining its relevance. The response is also below the required 250 words, which limits the opportunity to develop its ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the reader can identify the main topic of each section. However, progression is weak: the first body paragraph presents benefits, while the next begins “Exactly opposite to it” but continues to describe companies’ motives and benefits rather than a clear opposing view. Linking words such as “So” and “Hence” are repeated mechanically, and some connections do not show a clear cause-and-effect relationship. The conclusion also shifts abruptly to government restrictions on toy advertising. To improve, organise the essay around the two task questions, use each paragraph for one distinct point, and make references and transitions clearly reflect the relationship between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general topic, with relevant terms such as “advertising,” “customers,” “competition,” “profits” and “budget.” There are also attempts to express ideas about product choice and consumer preferences. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, including repeated use of “increase their sales” and “get variety of products.” Some word choices and spelling errors reduce accuracy, for example “prosucts,” “advertisiments” and “nowdays.” “Productivity” is also used where the intended meaning appears to be sales or profits. Build a more precise range for discussing innovation and consumer behaviour, and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses mostly simple sentence patterns and attempts some longer structures with “when,” “because” and “so.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but errors occur frequently enough to make the writing less controlled. Examples include “it helps companies to increase their sales” followed by “Their productivity increase,” where subject–verb agreement is inconsistent, and “More customer can develop interest,” which has problems with number and sentence structure. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “it has many pros” after a full stop and “Hence,Their.” To improve, practise accurate subject–verb agreement, plural forms and sentence boundaries, then combine ideas using a wider range of correctly controlled complex sentences.
