Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, it is common in businesses that they are trying to advertise their products as it is new from many perspectives to increase the sale. while there are variety of factors responsible for it, I believe it is a negative development.

There are a number of reasons why businesses are emphasising on the approach to show their products are different. One positive reason is that to attract the consumers. As people are now being so choosy while buying things, it is a very possible way to gain more attraction and to increase sale. Also there are a lot of competitions on the market for a same kind of product. For example, there are so many brands of electric oven, as there are competition, sellers are saying that their products are new as it consume less electricity. Therefore the electric bill will be low and it will be more convenient to the consumer. That is why, businesses has adopt this approach to seek attention.

Emphasising on products that these are somehow new is a negative development for several reasons. Firstly, to make the products new often can be cause quality deterioration. It is not necessary that a product should be unique all the time, but the quality matters. Secondly, people can be fall for decisiveness, it might influence their decision. Sometimes it can cost more money for the consumer. For instance, a person who is looking for a simple cutter, but a new product that has additional fucntions can cost more price while it has no use for the customer.

In conclusion, although emphasising on products to be new has various purposes, in my opinion this tendency is better for companies than customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain that businesses highlight novelty to attract consumers and stand out in a competitive market, then argue that this can harm customers through poorer quality and unnecessary expense. Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion. The electric-oven example supports the reason for this advertising, while the cutter example illustrates your concern about paying for unwanted features. This is a relevant response with some development, but the two reasons for the negative view are not explored equally: the possible decline in quality is asserted rather than explained or illustrated. To strengthen the response further, clarify how novelty-focused marketing can lead to that outcome and develop the consumer consequences with more precise support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining why businesses promote newness, a paragraph presenting your negative view, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “For instance” help readers follow the argument. However, some linking is mechanical, and a few connections are unclear. For example, “people can be fall for decisiveness” does not clearly express the intended link between advertising and consumer decisions. The conclusion also repeats the position without drawing together the main reasons. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions, while ensuring each example is explicitly connected to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “consumers,” “competition,” “quality deterioration,” and “additional functions,” and you attempt to express ideas beyond basic everyday language. However, the range and control are uneven, with noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems that sometimes make meaning less clear. Phrases such as “gain more attraction,” “fall for decisiveness,” and “cost more price” are not natural in this context; “fucntions” is also misspelled. Some wording is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “new” and “products.” Aim to learn common collocations and choose precise terms for your intended meaning. This would make the argument clearer and show more flexible vocabulary use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional example (“a person who is looking for a simple cutter”) and a contrast introduced by “although.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, and articles remain. For example, “businesses has adopt” should be “businesses have adopted,” and “there are a lot of competitions” needs a more suitable singular or uncountable construction. The opening sentence is also difficult to control, and “while there are variety of factors” is missing an article. Work on accurate clause construction and subject–verb agreement, then proofread for articles and punctuation. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
