IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays organizations have been presenting their products as unique than other organizations in their advertisements. This is entirely because of the rapidly increasing competition in the market. This has left people with numerous options to choose from.

In the cutthroat competition in businesses, many businesses have the pressure of stressing that their product is different from other products. Furthermore, to keep up in the race, they have to adapt to any means possible to be ahead. For instance, there are number of companies claiming to provide healthy, diet-friendly and eco-friendly snacks for people. They might all seem same at first glance but one provides something new than the other which makes people to choose from them.

This kind of variety has made a positive impact on consumers, as they have choice to choose from the options that has been spread out. Additionally, rather than going out of options, people now can freely adjust products and choose whatever seems fit to them. I remember the time, when I was online shopping to find new pair of trousers. I skimmed through many brands, some were cheap, some were comfortable, some were eco-friendly and so on. Finally, I chose something within my budget but also comfortable and looked perfect on me. It was something a specific brand provided at that time. So, in this way many options actually brought out the best of all for the customer to choose from.

At last, the options and unique features any business provides regarding their products are very helpful to the customers, even though the businesses are doing this to survive in the competitive market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: competition explains why businesses highlight novelty, and you clearly judge the trend positively for consumers. The examples of snack companies and your trouser purchase make the benefits relevant and help support your position. The response therefore covers the task, but some ideas are more fully explained than others. In particular, the reason businesses emphasise new features is stated mainly as a response to competition; you could explain more specifically how novelty attracts attention, differentiates a brand, or encourages sales. The consumer-benefit argument is clearer, though the shopping example illustrates choice more than the effect of advertising itself. Developing that link would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph explaining business motives, a paragraph presenting the positive impact, and a concluding summary. The progression from competition to consumer choice is easy to follow, and examples are placed in relevant paragraphs. Some linking is effective, including “Furthermore” and “Additionally,” but transitions can feel mechanical, and the conclusion largely repeats the earlier position rather than drawing the two strands together. Referencing is occasionally unclear: in “one provides something new than the other,” the reader has to infer which companies are being compared. Aim for more precise links between claims and examples, and use a concluding sentence that synthesises why novelty benefits consumers despite being driven by business competition.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “cutthroat competition,” “eco-friendly,” “budget,” and “unique features.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the response attempts some less common vocabulary. However, several expressions are imprecise or repetitive, which limits flexibility and naturalness. For example, “unique than other organizations” is not a natural comparison, while “options to choose from” and “choose from the options” repeat the same wording. “Adapt to any means possible” also does not express the intended idea idiomatically. Choose more precise collocations for product differentiation and consumer choice, and vary repeated terms such as “products,” “options,” and “choose.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the subordinate clause “even though the businesses are doing this to survive” and the relative clause “which makes people to choose from them.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “there are number of companies” (missing an article), “they have choice” (missing an article), and “options that has been spread out” (agreement and verb-form problems). In “I remember the time, when I was online shopping,” the comma interrupts the clause, and “find new pair of trousers” also needs an article. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and infinitive patterns; for example, use “makes people choose” rather than “makes people to choose.” More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
