It is widely acknowledged that teenagers face difficulties at home and school. The driving factors behind this phenomenon are challenges with identity and lack of support, whereas the optimal solutions to mitigate this situation are professional guidance by schools and moral support by family members which can bring positive change in the behaviour.

To commence with, the problems faced by the teenagers are identity crisis and academic subject selection. To expound, teenagers go through an immense hormonal change around puberty and consequently experience a roller coaster of emotions. Since they are going through a phase of transition, they are neither considered children anymore nor adults yet. As a result, they develop an identity issue which puts them in a formidable situation. What is more, they have to face a crucial decision in their life to choose the academic subjects for higher studies. While it is an important milestone for them, it is also stressful at the same time when parents and teachers do not agree with their choice of subjects. Therefore, it creates distress in their life on top of the ongoing identity issues.

Some plausible solutions proposed to alleviate these problems are professional counselling at schools and a supportive environment at home. To elaborate, the schools should make considerable efforts to provide adequate counselling sessions for teenagers which help them to vent out their stress and get valuable professional guidance.

Furthermore, parents should ensure a positive and encouraging environment at home, which makes teenagers comfortable enough to express their thoughts and discuss their problems with the family. To exemplify, in 2024, an experiment was conducted in Canada which showcased that 82% of grade 12 students benefited from in-school counselling sessions. Hence the above example vividly illustrates how the issue can be solved.

In conclusion, struggles related to identity and academic decision-making are the underpinnings associated with are the reasons associated with teenager’s hardships whereas the ardent steps such as professional counselling and a supportive environment are required to alleviate these problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of a country having a large population of young adults compared to older people. Instead, the essay discusses the difficulties teenagers face at home and school and suggests solutions for those problems. Because the response fails to address the specific prompt provided, it cannot be assessed as a successful response to the task. It does not present a position on the demographic shift mentioned in the instructions, nor does it provide relevant arguments regarding the societal impact of age distribution.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Despite being off-topic, the essay is structured logically with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas within the context of the student's chosen (but incorrect) topic. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'What is more', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problems from the proposed solutions. The logical flow is consistent, even though the content does not align with the task requirements.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The student demonstrates a good range of vocabulary, including terms like 'phenomenon', 'mitigate', 'formidable', 'plausible', and 'underpinnings'. The language is generally precise and used in a natural way. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the student's intended meaning clearly. While the topic is irrelevant, the lexical control is quite strong, showing an ability to use academic-style language effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a variety of complex sentence structures, such as 'While it is an important milestone for them, it is also stressful at the same time when parents and teachers do not agree with their choice of subjects.' There is a good command of grammar, with frequent error-free sentences. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the control over complex structures is consistent. The errors are very rare and do not impede communication at any point.
