Student answer (Band 7.0)

Population is one of the most important topics that every country pays close attention. In some countries, there is a considerably higher proportion of young adults compared to elderly citizens. This essay will discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of this trend, before concluding that the benefits are more significant.

To begin with, a country with a large number of young adults benefits from having a bigger workforce, which directly increases productivity and boosts economic output. In addition, young people are generally more open to new technology and are more likely to start their own businesses, which encourages innovation and creates further job opportunities. Importantly, a youthful population reduces the pressure on healthcare and pension systems, since there are fewer elderly citizens who require long term medical care and financial support. For example, countries like India, which have a young workforce, have seen rapid economic growth partly due to this demographic advantage.

On the other hand, a rapidly growing young population can place significant pressure on the job market, as the number of graduates may exceed the number of available jobs. For instance, some developing countries struggle with youth unemployment despite having a large workforce.

In conclusion, a large young population can lead to job market pressure, I believe that the advantages a stronger workforce, greater innovation, and reduced strain on healthcare systems clearly outweigh this drawback. If managed well through proper education and employment policies, countries with a youthful population are likely to sustained economic growth in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of India's economic growth. However, the development of the disadvantages is somewhat brief compared to the advantages. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the negative impacts of a youth-heavy population, perhaps discussing the social implications of high unemployment or the potential for political instability. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, though it could be more robust by briefly reiterating the core arguments rather than just listing them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand' are used effectively to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. One minor issue is the transition in the final paragraph: 'In conclusion, a large young population can lead to job market pressure, I believe...' requires a conjunction or a semicolon to connect the two clauses properly. Overall, the flow of ideas is smooth and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'demographic advantage', 'economic output', and 'long term medical care' are used accurately. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices could be more sophisticated. For instance, 'bigger workforce' could be improved to 'expanded labor force'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is appropriate for an academic context. To improve, try to incorporate more nuanced collocations to enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which aids readability. However, there are a few grammatical slips. For example, in the conclusion, you wrote 'countries with a youthful population are likely to sustained economic growth', which should be 'are likely to sustain economic growth'. Additionally, the first sentence, 'Population is one of the most important topics that every country pays close attention', is missing a preposition: 'pays close attention to'. Despite these minor errors, your control over complex structures is generally good.
