IELTS Writing Task 2 question
At the present time, the population of some countries includes a relatively large number of young adults, compared with the number of older people.
Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In many countries, young adults make up a considerably larger proportion of the population than elderly people. Although this demographic trend can create certain challenges, I believe its advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.
The most significant benefit is economic growth. A large working-age population provides businesses with an abundant supply of labour, which can increase productivity and encourage investment. Young workers are also generally more willing to acquire new skills, use modern technology and adapt to changing workplace requirements. Furthermore, a greater number of employed people means higher tax revenues for governments. These funds can be invested in infrastructure, education and healthcare, ultimately improving living standards.
However, a youthful population can also place pressure on society. Governments may struggle to provide enough universities, jobs, housing and public services for a growing young population. If employment opportunities fail to keep pace with population growth, unemployment and dissatisfaction may increase. In addition, young people who migrate to cities in search of work can contribute to overcrowding and rising housing costs.
Nevertheless, these problems can be addressed through long-term planning. Governments can expand vocational training, support entrepreneurship and create policies that encourage private-sector employment. For example, countries with a young workforce can accelerate industrial development by investing in manufacturing and technology. This can transform a demographic advantage into sustained economic progress.
In conclusion, although a predominantly young population may create pressure on jobs and public services, it offers an opportunity for economic development. Therefore, I believe the advantages substantially outweigh the disadvantages. These are the examples of the discussion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding economic growth and the challenges of infrastructure are well-developed and supported with logical reasoning. The essay is balanced, acknowledging both sides before concluding that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The final sentence, 'These are the examples of the discussion,' is unnecessary and slightly detracts from the formal tone, but it does not undermine the overall task achievement. The ideas are relevant and the response is well-focused on the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits and the challenges is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore,' 'However,' and 'Nevertheless.' Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of the argument. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between sentences is clear, making the essay easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for an academic task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'demographic trend,' 'abundant supply of labour,' 'tax revenues,' and 'vocational training.' The language is precise and conveys the intended meaning effectively. While there is no highly sophisticated or idiomatic language, the range is flexible enough to discuss the topic with clarity and precision. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'If employment opportunities fail to keep pace with population growth, unemployment and dissatisfaction may increase.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. The control over complex structures is consistent, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The writing is accurate and demonstrates a solid grasp of English syntax.
