Student answer (Band 6.0)

With the passing of time, many a countries' major population is made up of the youth when compared to the older citizens. Some see this situation as a positive, while others may view it negatively. This essay will highlight both the sides of this argument and reveal which side outweighs the other.

On the one hand, the youth of a country can be beneficial in a number of ways. As the younger generation have better access to education, they are smarter and more tech savvy than the older generation. They can help their elders with digital tasks that saves their time and effort. Moreover, the younger generation is more active and energetic when compared to the seniors. The older generation can rely on the youngsters when they require any physical aid. For example: a teenager can help an old man carry his heavy groceries as he is stronger than him.

On the other hand, the newer generation may lack certain skills in few areas. They may not be able to preserve their culture when compared to their ancestors. As the youngsters tends to be leaning towards a more contemporary world, they may not be interested in the history of their own culture. To elucidate, a young Asian kid may be more influenced by the Western culture instead of his own, as he may not find it as appealing. Furthermore, many young adults view their grandparents as role models or confidants. With the passing away of the seniors, these youngsters may feel lost and like they do not have anyone to guide them as they grow older.

To conclude, there are several aspects to both the sides of this discussion. However, I am of the opinion that having a significant amount of youngsters is better than the elders, as they are the future. Someday, they too will pave the way for their younger generations by navigating life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of a youth-heavy population. Your position is clear throughout the essay, and you provide relevant examples, such as the role of technology and cultural preservation. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about the 'passing away of seniors' is a bit brief and could be expanded to discuss the broader societal impact on social structures or economic stability. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with more depth and nuance rather than relying on simple examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'To elucidate' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more sophisticated. For example, the transition between the benefits of technology and the physical aid provided by the youth is a bit abrupt. Additionally, the referencing in the third paragraph regarding 'these youngsters' is clear, but the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'tech savvy,' 'contemporary,' and 'elucidate.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'many a countries' major population' is grammatically awkward and unnatural. Additionally, phrases like 'physical aid' are functional but could be more precise. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, but the precision is inconsistent. To improve, focus on learning collocations—words that naturally go together—and avoid slightly awkward phrasing to ensure your writing sounds more natural and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex sentences, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'the younger generation is more active... as he is stronger than him' contains a pronoun agreement issue ('he' referring to 'generation'). There are also subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'the youngsters tends to be leaning.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and consistent pronoun usage to enhance the accuracy of your complex sentences.
