Student answer (Band 8.0)
In many countries, young adults make up a considerably larger proportion of the population than elderly people. Although this demographic pattern can create several social and economic challenges, I believe its advantages outweigh the disadvantages because a youthful population can strengthen the workforce, encourage innovation and accelerate national development.
One major advantage is the availability of a large and energetic labour force. Young adults are generally capable of working for longer hours and adapting more easily to technological changes. As a result, businesses can expand and national productivity can increase. Furthermore, when a high proportion of citizens are employed, governments receive more revenue through taxation while spending comparatively less on pensions and elderly healthcare. This creates an opportunity to invest more heavily in education, infrastructure and public services. A younger population may also promote entrepreneurship, as young people are often more willing to take risks, establish businesses and introduce new ideas.
Nevertheless, this situation has certain drawbacks. If the economy cannot generate enough employment, a large youth population may lead to widespread unemployment, poverty and social unrest. Governments must also spend substantial amounts on universities, vocational training and housing. In addition, a shortage of older people may mean that society has fewer experienced professionals and mentors to guide younger generations. However, these problems can largely be controlled through effective planning, skills-based education and job creation.
In conclusion, while a disproportionately young population may place pressure on employment and public services, it offers greater long-term benefits. Provided that governments invest in education and create sufficient economic opportunities, young adults can become a productive workforce that drives innovation, economic growth and social progress.
