Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, some nation's population mainly comprise of young adults as compared to older people. I firmly believe the advantages of it outweighs the disadvantages because of economic growth and lower healthcare costs.

Population of countries that have larger number of youth contribute towards economic growth as they make up most of the working class in all fields. Moreover, it boosts productivity and labor supply because young adults are capable of investing more time and energy into work which helps in the growth of the economy. Furthermore, the burden of healthcare costs due to older generation is less when the population is less of total population. Lastly, younger generation adapts easily to technology changes which contribute to better work productivity and innovation.

Conversely, if there is a shortage of jobs, it can lead to unemployment if the economy does not grow fast enough. When the basic needs are not met and prices keep on rising, it leads to increase in crime rate. Consequently, unrest occurs which worsens a nation's environment and declines the standard of living. Furthermore, high number of young adults increases the demand for affordable housing, higher education and entry-level public services. State policies can counter these disadvantages by offering young adults opportunities and freelancing jobs can also fill the unemployment gap.

In conclusion, if a countries population mainly consists of young adults it helps in the growth of economy which contributes to better standard of living and less pressure on hospitals whereas there are few disadvantages that can be dealt with if the government has policies in place to tackle the problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, focusing on economic growth and healthcare, and are supported by logical reasoning. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about healthcare costs is brief and could have been expanded with more specific examples. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more detailed explanation or a concrete example to fully flesh out the arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', 'Conversely', and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the advantages from the disadvantages. To improve, try to vary the cohesive devices further and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother, as some sentences feel like a list of points rather than a cohesive argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'productivity' and 'innovation'. However, there are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'some nation's population mainly comprise of' (should be 'comprises') and 'burden of healthcare costs... is less when the population is less of total population' (awkward phrasing). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('population... comprise') and article usage ('a countries population'). Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'the burden of healthcare costs due to older generation is less'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
