Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of a young population. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the benefits of technology and economic growth are mentioned, the discussion on the disadvantages is quite brief and lacks depth, focusing more on the general role of the elderly rather than the specific societal challenges of a youth-heavy demographic. The position is clear, but the arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The conclusion is also quite abrupt and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One major benefit', 'Similarly', and 'On the other hand'. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'as well as'. Additionally, there are some minor issues with referencing and sentence-level flow, particularly in the second paragraph where the connection between ideas could be smoother. Overall, the logical flow is sufficient, but it lacks the sophisticated management of cohesion required for higher bands.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'modern machinery', 'upbringing', and 'international level'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing or imprecise word choices, such as 'younger ones' instead of 'younger generations' or 'enhance to quantity'. There is also a lack of more sophisticated, academic collocations that would elevate the response. The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and flexibility expected at higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('new generation are', 'they discover'), article usage ('the discover'), and punctuation. Some sentences are slightly disjointed due to these errors. While the writer attempts complex structures, the control over these is inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed without errors that distract the reader.
