Student answer (Band 7.5)
Nowadays, the proportion of young adults in some countries is considerably higher than that of elderly people. Although this demographic trend can create certain challenges, I believe that it brings more advantages than disadvantages.
One of the principal benefits of having a predominantly young population is that young people tend to be energetic, ambitious and receptive to innovation. They are more likely to embrace modern technology, develop unconventional solutions and contribute to economic growth. A large working-age population can also enhance a country's productivity, as more people are available to participate in various sectors of the economy. Furthermore, young adults often have the motivation to establish businesses and pursue professional opportunities, which can ultimately improve their standard of living and contribute to national development. For instance, countries such as the Netherlands provide excellent educational and employment opportunities, attracting a substantial number of young professionals.
Nevertheless, an ageing population also has considerable value. Older people possess a wealth of experience, wisdom and practical knowledge accumulated throughout their lives. Their insights can help younger generations avoid past mistakes and preserve important cultural values and traditions. Consequently, if societies fail to appreciate or involve elderly citizens, they may lose an invaluable source of knowledge and guidance.
In conclusion, although a society with a relatively small elderly population may lose some traditional wisdom and experience, I am convinced that the advantages of having a large young generation outweigh the drawbacks. Young people can stimulate economic progress, foster innovation and play a pivotal role in creating a prosperous future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student has fully addressed all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of having a large young adult population relative to older people, and presented a clear position throughout the essay. The main ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant reasoning and examples. For instance, the discussion on economic growth, productivity, and innovation is effectively linked to the advantages of a youthful demographic. Furthermore, the counter-argument regarding the value of an ageing population is well-integrated. The position is maintained consistently from the introduction through to the conclusion, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 or 8.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the benefits of a young population, the counter-argument regarding older generations, and finally a succinct conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'Nevertheless' are used appropriately and flexibly to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to an overall coherent piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student uses a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some precision and flexibility. Less common lexical items such as 'predominantly', 'unconventional solutions', 'accumulated', and 'pivotal role' are employed effectively. There is good awareness of collocation, and word choices are generally accurate. While it stops just short of the wide and flexible range required for Band 8 due to some reliance on standard academic vocabulary sets, the vocabulary is varied and fully adequate for clear communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The response features a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, demonstrating solid control of grammar and punctuation. The majority of sentences are error-free, and complex forms such as conditional clauses ('if societies fail to appreciate...') and participial phrases ('accumulated throughout their lives') are handled well. Punctuation is accurate, and grammatical errors are virtually absent. The control shown across complex sentence forms aligns comfortably with a Band 8.0 level.
