Student answer (Band 6.0)

At present, some countries have a considerably higher proportion of young adults than elderly people. Although this demographic trend can create certain challeges, I believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, mainly because the economy and support long-term development.

Overall, a youthful population can contribute signicantly to economic growth because young adults form a productive workforce and can promote innovation. Although goverments may face pressure to provide sufficient jobs and public services, these challenges can be managed through effective planning and investment.

One major Advantage of having more young adults is the availblity of a large and energetic workforce . Young people can work for many years, pay taxes and contribute to economic development. In addition, they are often more willing to learn new skills and adopt modern technology, which can increase productivity and encourage enterpreneurship. For instance, countries with a large working-age population may attract international companies beacause business can access a wider pool of emploees.

On the other hand, a high number of young adults can create pressure on goverments. There may be greater demand for universities, housing, healthcare and, most importantly, employment. If enough jobs are not available, unemployment and competition for positions may rise. However, governments can reduce these problems by improving vocational education, developing infrastructure and encouraging businesses to create new employment opportunities.

In conclusion, although a predominantly young population can create challenges related to employment and public services, I believe its economic benefits are greater. A productive workforce, technological development and entrepreneurship can contribute substantially to a country’s long-term prosperity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of a population with a large proportion of young adults, and presents a clear position throughout. The introduction outlines the writer's stance, and the body paragraphs present relevant ideas such as economic growth, workforce productivity, and government pressures. However, some arguments remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the mention that the economy supports long-term development in the introduction contains a noticeable grammatical fragment ('and support long-term development'), and ideas like entrepreneurship could be extended further with more detailed examples. Despite these minor limitations in development, the response covers all parts well and presents a coherent overall position. Therefore, a band score of 6.5 is well-earned.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is appropriately paragraphed, with an introduction, an overview paragraph, a body paragraph dedicated to advantages, another to disadvantages, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'In addition', 'For instance', 'On the other hand', and 'However'. Referencing and substitution are generally clear, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, allowing the reader to follow the writer's line of argument easily. On balance, the cohesive features and paragraph structure align closely with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common items such as 'demographic trend', 'productivity', 'entrepreneurship', and 'vocational education'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors scattered throughout the text, including 'challeges' instead of challenges, 'signicantly' instead of significantly, 'goverments' instead of governments, 'availblity' instead of availability, 'enterpreneurship' instead of entrepreneurship, and 'beacause' and 'emploees'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect typical Band 6 characteristics where spelling inaccuracies prevent access to higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well (e.g., 'If enough jobs are not available, unemployment and competition for positions may rise'). There are, however, a few noticeable grammatical errors, such as the incomplete clause in the introduction ('mainly because the economy and support long-term development') and occasional punctuation slips. Despite these errors, the majority of simple sentences are accurate, and the grammatical errors rarely impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
