Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, in some countries there are more young adults than older people. This situation has some advantages as well as disadvantages. In my opinion, I think the advantages are more than the disadvantages.
One of the main advantage of having more young people is that they can work and help the country economy. Young adults have more energy and they can work for many years. They can also learn new technology easily because they are more familiar with computers and internet. For example, many young people can work in IT companies and bring new ideas to the business. Also, young workers pay taxes to the government, which can be used for developing roads, hospitals and other facilities.
However, there are also some disadvantages of having a large young population. The biggest problem is unemployment. If there is not enough jobs for young people, many of them may not find a good work after completing their education. This can create financial problems for families. Another problem is that government have to spend a lot of money on education and training. For example, if a country has a very large number of young adults, it needs more colleges and job opportunities for them.
In conclusion, having more young adults can create some problems, especially unemployment and pressure on the government. However, I believe that the advantages are greater because young people can work, pay taxes and help the economy to grow. If the government provide enough jobs and education, this situation can be very useful for the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of having a large young adult population and provides a clear position. The ideas presented, such as economic contributions through taxation and technological adaptability, as well as the challenges of unemployment and pressures on educational infrastructure, are relevant and supported with explanations. However, some arguments remain somewhat generalised and could benefit from further depth or more specific real-world examples. For instance, the discussion on unemployment is straightforward but lacks concrete illustration. Overall, the response fulfils the requirements of the prompt effectively, earning a solid Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The structure is traditional, featuring a clear introduction, separate body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main advantage', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the text, although referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, ensuring that the development of ideas is easy to follow throughout the response. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including terms like 'financial problems', 'unemployment', and 'infrastructure' contextually implied. However, there are noticeable word form and singular/plural errors, such as 'One of the main advantage' (instead of 'advantages') and 'enough jobs' versus 'a good work'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in collocation and word choice persist. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede overall communication, placing this securely at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures like 'If the government provide enough jobs...'. There are several grammatical errors present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('government have to spend', 'government provide') and missing articles ('help the country economy'). Despite these errors, the complex structures attempted show an awareness of grammar, and the mistakes rarely impede communication. This balanced mix of accurate simple sentences and flawed complex structures reflects a Band 6.0 performance.
