Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

At present, some countries have a much higher proportion of young adults than older people. Although this situation can create some problems, I believe that the advantages are greater than the disadvantages because a young population can contribute significantly to the economy and society.

One major advantage of having a large young population is that there are more people who can work and contribute to economic growth. Young adults are generally able to work for many years, pay taxes and support different industries. They can also bring new ideas and skills to the workplace. For example, countries with a large number of young workers may have more employees in areas such as technology, construction and business. As a result, a young population can help a country develop economically.

However, having a large number of young people can also create some challenges. One important disadvantage is that governments may need to provide more jobs, schools and other services for the growing population. If there are not enough employment opportunities, many young people may remain unemployed, which can cause financial difficulties for individuals and families. Nevertheless, these problems can be reduced if governments invest in education, training and job creation. Therefore, the disadvantages can be managed with effective planning and investment.

In conclusion, although a large young population can put pressure on employment, education and public services, I believe that its advantages outweigh the disadvantages. A young workforce can provide valuable skills, increase productivity and contribute to the long-term economic development of a country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task directly by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of having a young population, ultimately taking a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, such as economic contributions and potential employment challenges. For example, the student notes that young adults can 'work for many years, pay taxes and support different industries.' While the arguments are well-selected, they could be slightly more extended and illustrated with more specific, concrete examples to fully reach the higher bands. However, the position is well-maintained throughout, satisfying the Band 7 requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and a logical progression of ideas throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from introduction to the advantages, the disadvantages, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and appropriately, such as 'One major advantage', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response. Referencing is clear, and the overall progression is easy to follow, making this a solid performance that fits well within the Band 7 descriptor for cohesion and logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'proportion', 'economic growth', 'unemployed', and 'long-term economic development' are used accurately to discuss the topic. There are also occasional attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'contribute significantly' and 'employment opportunities'. While the vocabulary is sufficient for clear communication, it lacks the broader flexibility, precision, and sophistication of less common lexical items required for Band 7 or above. Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student successfully employs complex structures, such as concessive clauses ('Although this situation can create some problems...') and conditional structures ('If there are not enough employment opportunities...'). Grammar and punctuation are handled with good general control. While there are a few minor errors or simplistic phrasings, the majority of sentences are grammatically sound and communication is never impeded. This sits comfortably within the Band 6 to 7 range, demonstrating sufficient control of complex structures.
