Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, some countries have a higher proportion of young adults compared to the older people in their population. The primary advantages of having greater number of young adults include productivity, economic growth of the country, while one of the main disadvantages is lack of experience. This essay will show that the benefits of having more young adults than older people will outweigh the disadvantages for a country.

Youth is one of the most important factors, that drives the economic development of a country. Young adults, compared to older people have lot more productivity which reflects in the overall eco-system of a nation. For example, USA has significant number of young minds who drive the key sectors of the country that include technology, medicine, crime and law, etc. One of the major factors for the economic growth of India is its increase in the number of creative and productive young people.

It is a saying that, the older a person gets, the wiser he becomes. Older people bring sense of calmness, patience, experience and maturity. Younger adults often take impulsive decisions both in their personal and professional life. In the exuberance of youth, they sometimes make mistakes which often come back to haunt them. Although nowadays, a lot of younger adults do practice yoga and other exercises to be calmer and more patient, the experience and clarity that the older people possess often come in use in tough times.

To sum up, benefits of having more young adults than older people outweigh the challenges, mainly because a nation's economic and cultural identity or positioning in the world is associated with its healthy and productive youth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of having a younger population and presents a clear overall position in the introduction and conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, the advantage of economic productivity is illustrated with specific references to the USA and India, but the disadvantage of lack of experience is somewhat under-developed, relying on general statements about impulsiveness rather than concrete examples. To reach a higher level, the response would need to extend and support all of its main ideas with equal depth throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a final conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as economic benefits in the second paragraph and psychological drawbacks in the third. Nevertheless, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like 'It is a saying that' feel somewhat unnatural, and referencing between sentences could be smoother. To improve further, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without relying on repetitive formulas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate main ideas clearly. There are successful attempts to use less common items such as 'productivity', 'economic development', and 'impulsive decisions'. However, some word choice and collocation inaccuracies occur, such as 'greater number of young adults' missing an article and 'crime and law' being an unusual collocate for economic sectors. Spelling and word-form errors do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a more precise and flexible command of less common lexical items and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like subordinate clauses in sentences such as 'Although nowadays, a lot of younger adults do practice yoga...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('greater number', 'lot more productivity') and minor punctuation slips, but these errors rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are accurate. To move up to the next band, the writer should incorporate a greater variety of complex structures with higher frequency and maintain tighter control over grammatical precision.
