Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, most countries have a relative large number of youths when compared with the number of the ageing population. While it does have some advantages such as an increased workforce and lower dependency rate it also has some formidable disadvantages like lack of experience in many job sectors.

Youth population is more likely to be more productive and skilled. This is because young people are more versatile and has higher interest to learn more skills. As a result, they can adapt to changes in technology and are less likely to follow traditional methods to solve a problem which may be more efficient.Such as, if a young adult faces a navigation problem they will instantly search it up on the internet and find a solution quite instanly suggesting more effective approach to problem solving.Furthermore, a country with a relatively large number of young adults are more likely to have lower unemployment rates reducing dependecy on welfare payments which will have a positive effect on the fiscal budget.

However, a young population may mean less experienced workers in the employment circuit as fresh graduates wont have the experience of a veteran who worked in a particular sector for more than 15+ years. These may cause skill shortages in a country resulting in lower output production which may have a adverse effect on the economy. Not only that, young skilled workers are more likely to emigrate overseas in search of better employment oppurtunities.Whereas, an ageing population would not do so as they have family and economic ties to this country.

From my perspective, the advantages of the situation does outweigh the disadvantages as it leaves room for the country to adapt to technological changes in this digital age while also producing a more skilled and productive workforce. These may help the country grow economically and increase living standards for its citizens. Therefore, a young population may help make the country more prosperous and protect its sovereignity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the question and state a clear view in the introduction and conclusion: the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The points about adaptability, productivity, welfare costs, limited experience and emigration are relevant, and the navigation example helps illustrate how young adults may use technology to solve problems. The response also shows some development beyond simply listing advantages and disadvantages. However, several claims remain broad or are not fully explained: for example, the link between a large youth population and lower unemployment is asserted rather than demonstrated, and the possible effects of skilled-worker emigration are not explored. To strengthen the argument, explain these links and support them with a more specific example, while making the comparison between the overall benefits and costs more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion that returns to the question. The progression from young workers’ adaptability to economic effects is generally understandable, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “However,” and “From my perspective” help guide the reader. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “Such as” introduces an example as a fragment, and “These may cause skill shortages” has an unclear reference. The conclusion also repeats earlier points rather than drawing the comparison together. Use complete example sentences, make pronoun references explicit, and link each paragraph’s evidence more directly to your overall judgement.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “workforce,” “dependency rate,” “skill shortages,” “fiscal budget,” and “economic ties.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common expressions are attempted. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “employment circuit,” “lower output production,” and “protect its sovereignty” in this context. There are also spelling errors, including “instanly,” “dependecy,” “oppurtunities,” and “sovereignity.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe “the labour market” and “reduced output” rather than using less idiomatic combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional clause (“if a young adult faces…”) and a contrast introduced by “Whereas.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “young people…has” and “a country…are,” while articles and sentence boundaries need attention in phrases such as “a adverse effect” and “problem…Such as.” The opening also runs two sentences together without a space after the full stop. Review agreement, article use, and punctuation, and ensure examples are integrated into complete sentences. Greater accuracy in these areas would make your varied sentence forms easier to follow.
