Student answer (Band 5.0)

The picture shows a graph with a title "Frequency pf eating at fast food resturants among people in the USA ([redacted phone])", it has % of people represented on y-axis and years or time on x-axis. Information is displayed in the form of bars that includes dard black colour bars, light colour bars followed by lines on bars. On x-axis three years have been mentioned i.e 2003 representing the dark black colour bar then 2006 is represented through light colour bars and 2013 is represenetd thorough lines on bars. People eating food everyday were more in 2003 but they are at same socre in 2006 and 2016 but overall they are less then 5%. People eating food several times and once a week was more in 2006.At last people eating food once or twice, a few times in a year and never was more for 2013 as compared to others. So, overall results showed that the results were changing each year with respect to give years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and make some relevant comparisons, including that daily eating was below 5% and that weekly eating peaked in 2006. However, the response only partially summarises the main features: it gives no clear overview of the overall pattern and does not report the key figures that would support the comparisons. Some claims are inaccurate or unclear: “once or twice, a few times in a year and never was more for 2013” is not true for all three categories, since “never” was higher in 2003. You also refer to 2016, although the chart shows 2013. Focus on the largest categories and their changes, and support the overview with accurate data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the chart, describes the bar colours, and then comments on eating frequencies. This gives the reader some sense of the topic, but the progression is not consistently clear. The description of the bars takes up space without helping to compare the data, and the final sentence—“the results were changing each year with respect to give years”—does not provide a meaningful conclusion. Linking is limited, with “but,” “At last,” and “So” doing most of the work, and some references such as “they” are unclear. Organise the response into a brief introduction, an overview of the main trends, and focused comparisons of the categories.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “represented,” “y-axis,” “bars,” and “as compared to,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spelling errors make the description less clear, such as “score” for the figures, “give years” for the three years, and “once or twice” without specifying the monthly frequency. There are also noticeable spelling errors in “resturants,” “dard,” and “represenetd.” Use precise terms such as “percentage,” “frequency,” “rose,” “fell,” and “accounted for,” and check spelling carefully. Avoid describing colours unless they are needed to distinguish the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, for example, “People eating food several times and once a week was more in 2006.” However, the longer constructions are often faulty, and errors sometimes make relationships difficult to follow. In that example, the plural subject requires “were,” while “People eating food everyday were more” is an awkward and incomplete comparison. The sentence beginning “Information is displayed…” also has an unclear structure, and the final clause “with respect to give years” is not grammatically formed. Tense and reference are inconsistent, including the shift from 2003 and 2006 to “2016.” Practise clear comparative sentence patterns, such as “The proportion eating weekly was highest in 2006.”
