Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart illustrates the routine of general public in the USA to eat meals in the fast food restaurants for a decade, between 2003 and 2013.
Overall, there is a small number of citizens who ate daily or never ate in their lives. However, it is evident that the population who visited fast food chains once a week or once or twice a month is extremely large.
Firstly, the daily visitors were around 4% in 2003 but their number was decreased to 3% in both 2006 and 2013. Secondly, the public who visited on multiple occasions in a week was 17% in 2003, but their number was increased to 20% in 2006 but later decreased to 16% in 2013.
Thirdly, the number of people who visited once a week were 31% in 2003, increased to 33% in 2006 but reduced to 27% in 2013. Fourtly, the percentage of citizens who visited once or twice a month is 30%, 25% and 33% in 2003, 2006 and 2013, respectively,
Fiftly, the citizens who rarely visited in a year were 13% in 2003 but increased to 15% in both 2006 and 2013. Finally, the public who never visited was 5% in 2003 but reduced to 4% in both 2006 and 2013.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and trends across the three years provided. You have selected relevant data points to support your descriptions, such as the peak in weekly visitors in 2006. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant trends, which is essential for a high band score. To improve further, ensure that you provide more analytical comparisons between categories rather than just listing the data chronologically. For example, contrasting the stability of the 'never' category with the volatility of the 'once a week' category would demonstrate a higher level of data synthesis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow a consistent structure. You have used sequencing words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the data. However, the use of these markers is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your cohesive devices and use more sophisticated linking phrases to connect ideas between sentences, rather than relying solely on list-like transitions. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, including terms like 'illustrates', 'decreased', 'increased', and 'respectively'. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'routine of general public' which is slightly unnatural; 'eating habits of the general public' would be more precise. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'peaked') to avoid repetition and demonstrate a wider lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the number of people who visited once a week were' (should be 'was') and the spelling error 'Fourtly' and 'Fiftly'. Additionally, some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'the population who visited fast food chains... is extremely large'. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor spelling errors. Increasing the use of complex structures, such as relative clauses or participle phrases, would also enhance your grammatical range.
