Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar graph illustrates how often people in the USA consumed fast food at restaurants across six different categories from 2003 to 2013.

Overall, eating at fast food restaurants once a week or once or twice a month was the most common habit throughout the period, whereas eating fast food every day and never were consistently the least common patterns.

An analysis of the image reveals that, in 2003, the largest proportion of people ate at fast food restaurants once a week accounted for around 31%, whilst in 2006, the figure rose to 33% approximately, and by 2013, the figure dipped to 28%. In addition, in 2003, people who ate at fast food restaurants once or twice a month recorded 30%, whereas the figure dropped to 25% in 2006, and again this figure increased significantly to 33% by 2013. Moreover, in 2003, people who ate at fast food restaurants several times a week recorded 7%, while in 2006 it increased to 20%, before falling to 16% in 2013.

From the image it is evident that, people consuming at fast food restaurants a few times a year accounted for 13% in 2003, and rose slightly to 14% in 2006, and remained stable 2013. However, daily consumption of fast food at restaurant accounted for 4%, 3% and 3% in 2003 ,2006 and 2013 respectively. A similar pattern was observed among people who never ate at fast food restaurants, where it recorded 5%, 4% and 4% in 2003 ,2006 and 2013 respectively

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main features and trends. You have successfully selected key data points to support your summary and made relevant comparisons between the categories and years. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant trends, such as the dominance of weekly and monthly consumption patterns. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are presented with complete accuracy; for instance, you mentioned 'remained stable 2013' which is missing a preposition. Overall, the report is well-focused and covers all parts of the prompt adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in addition', 'moreover', and 'however' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different trends. The progression of ideas is clear throughout the response. To improve further, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'remained stable 2013' requires a preposition like 'in' to maintain smooth flow. The use of cohesive devices is generally natural and contributes to the overall readability of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'largest proportion', 'consistently the least common patterns', and 'recorded' are used effectively. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive. You occasionally struggle with word choice, such as 'consuming at fast food restaurants', which is slightly unnatural; 'eating at' or 'frequenting' would be better. Spelling is accurate throughout. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'recorded' or 'accounted for' to enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'whereas' and 'before falling to'. While the majority of sentences are error-free, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as the missing preposition in 'remained stable 2013' and the inconsistent punctuation around dates (e.g., '2003 ,2006'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching the highest band. Your control over complex structures is generally good, and the punctuation is mostly functional, though attention to detail regarding spacing and prepositions would improve the overall accuracy.
