Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to accurately report the data provided in the chart. The descriptions of the categories (e.g., 'half quarter', 'three quarter') are confusing and do not correspond to the percentages shown in the visual. Furthermore, the summary lacks a clear overview of the main trends, such as the overall decline or stability in certain categories. The analysis is repetitive and struggles to identify the key features, such as the most popular or least popular frequencies. To improve, focus on identifying the highest and lowest points and describing the trends over the decade clearly rather than listing individual years in a repetitive manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay lacks logical organization and progression. While there are paragraphs, the internal structure of the sentences is disjointed, making it difficult to follow the comparison of data. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, leading to a repetitive and mechanical flow. For example, the constant repetition of 'is minimum' and 'is maximum' creates a fragmented reading experience. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words such as 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'subsequently' to connect ideas and ensure that the information is presented in a way that guides the reader through the data logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The student uses non-standard phrases like 'speedy food' instead of 'fast food' and 'half quarter' to describe data, which is not appropriate for an academic report. There is no evidence of a range of vocabulary suitable for describing trends or statistical data. To improve, you should learn specific terminology for describing graphs, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'reached a peak', or 'experienced a decline'. Expanding your vocabulary to include these precise terms will significantly improve your ability to communicate the information effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the chart... exhibit'), incorrect word order, and missing articles. The sentence structures are very basic and often lack the necessary complexity to convey the data accurately. Many sentences are poorly constructed, making the meaning unclear. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct verb forms, and using articles appropriately. Practicing the construction of complex sentences that compare two different data points will also help you move toward a higher band score.
